1932: Hoover, unpopular and hampered due to the depression, or 1976, Gerald Ford carrying the GOP flag after the whole Watergate/Nixon debacle?

Ford almost won in 1976. Hoover was so unpopular that Satan himself would have done better.

This is like asking “who’s the better poster, hangfan91 or CrabCake?”

Ford.

Wasn't he ahead in the polls until he made a gaffe ... I think he made a comment about Czechoslovakia / Czech Republic; or he mistakenly said that Poland was still under USSR control. He made some gaffe that indicated a lack of geography knowledge.

Easily 1976.  1932 was like 2008 for the GOP.  They had no chance even if they'd nominated Jesus.  Ford almost pulled off the comeback and I think if the election was held at the end of November instead of the beginning that he would've beaten Carter.  He may have beaten Carter IRL if he'd kept Rockefeller on board as VP.

His exact quote was "there is no Soviet domination in Eastern Europe and there never will be in a Ford administration".

This is an easy one and should be a unanimous yes to 76.
Ford came very close to winning the electoral college and had there been a few more days to a week in that election he would have caught up to Carter. I'm convinced he would have beaten Carter by taking Ohio and Mississippi or Ohio and Wisconsin combo's.

1976: Ford winning Ohio and Mississippi would've done it.

Carter was an extremely weak candidate as shown by his blowout loss in 80. FDR is arguably the best politician in American history.

I think Ford does deserve some credit for making 1976 one of the more competitive elections of the 20th century despite taking office in extremely challenging circumstances, and it's not like Jimmy Carter was some electoral titan (at least outside of the South), but imo 1932 and 1920 are the two least winnable elections (for the losing party) since the Civil War.
