Phoenix or St. Louis for the DNC 2024?

For the Republicans, the cities and Republicans have a rift. So, will they have their convention in an exurb and small town?

No clue for the RNC, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Milwaukee get a do-over at the DNC so they can put on the in-person convention they were supposed to.

2020 was unusual in that Charlotte was the only city to make a serious bid to host the RNC.  (Las Vegas made a bid as well, but it was a somewhat unserious one thrown together at the last minute, without real support from local government.) What's happened is that, now that the GOP is the party of Trump rather than the party of Bush, McCain, and Romney, it's become too controversial for most big city governments to offer to host the party's convention, even if doing so would likely offer an economic boost to the city.

So the question is, with 2024 being a year in which (presumably) someone other than Trump will be nominated, will that change?  Maybe not.  Maybe Trump has made the party too toxic, at least in the near term, and it'll have to nominate someone closer to the old school GOP before we start getting bids from more than one or two cities in each cycle.  (But of course, the 2024 nomination won't be decided until 2024, and the location of the convention will be decided well before that.)

Why wouldn't big city mayors want to hold the RNC if it is profitable? (or on a similar note, why are people opposed to the location of the RNC in general?)

Because Trump's version of the Republican Party has become too toxic for a critical mass of voters in these cities, making it politically dicey for these mayors to "enable" them by offering to host a gathering of them in their city.  They don't want to host a big gathering of people who they think are racists, sexists, etc.

I have been for a time of the opinion that the conventions should be downsized much and hosted by random small cities like South Bend or Coeur d'Alene or Fayetteville. Of course this will never happen so the RNC should probably start courting big red suburbs like Mesa, AZ or something if it cannot be hosted by big central cities.

RNC: A blue city in a swing state with a Republican Governor (so possibly Miami or Orlando, as even if the city doesn't pay for it, it's possible the state government will step in and pay for it)

DNC: Houston, Dallas or San Antonio.

Yeah, there might be an agreement already that Milwaukee will get 2024 to make up for the disruptions.

I doubt Charlotte would want a do-over of the RNC in 2024, though, so it did make a lot of sense as a convention city.
