Reagan won CA by ~16 points in both 1980 and 1984, despite improving his national PV margin from +9.7 to +18.2. Reagan thus underperformed in CA in 1984. The state was still Republican back then, but it looks like we begin to see the seeds of its future evolution during the Reagan presidency. What happened? There weren't that many Latinos and Asians in the state in the 80s, and the aerospace & defense industry in southern California was still strong (most of its employees were Republican).

Reagan 1984 performance in California was still the second-best performance by a Republican in California since 1928 only to his 1980 performance. PVI wise it was still more Republican than 1956 and 1972

California PVI(1956, 1972,1984,1988)

1956: D+4.3
1972: D+9.7
1984: D+2
1988: D+4.2

It really started to trend left hard after the collapse of the defense industry which saw nearly a million Californians(who mostly voted Republican) move to states like Texas while liberals from the North East and Midwest who moved to California because of the tech boom caused a massive shift in just 10 years
