Quote
The appointments of Chad Wolf and Ken Cuccinelli to the top two leadership roles at the Department of Homeland Security are invalid, the Government Accountability Office found in a new report, delivering a major rebuke to the Trump administration, which has repeatedly tried to skirt the confirmation process.

The Trump administration has increasingly relied on filling top posts with people on a temporary basis, fielding criticism from lawmakers. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer immediately responded to the GAO's report Friday, saying President Donald Trump's "efforts to install political sycophants to implement his extreme policies in an end run around the law and Senate have finally caught up with him."

A Justice Department attorney said at a Friday court hearing that the Office of Legal Counsel will review the GAO's opinion and come to a decision on it.

The Department of Homeland Security -- the third-largest federal department -- hasn't had a Senate-confirmed secretary since Kirstjen Nielsen, who resigned in April 2019.

But will there be any consequences for the lawless Trump administration?

Yes. They're going to get voted out of office, or we're going to have a Second Civil War.

This is a simple, if depressing, prediction.  America will not hang together long with Dictator Donald in charge. So either he is ousted in November, or his actions will inevitably provoke a civil war.

We're going to have a second civil war either way. If Biden wins, I think most red states are just going say "screw it"and try to secede from the union.

We've arguably been in a "cold" civil war for awhile now.

We've arguably been in a "cold" civil war for awhile now.

We have been in that ever since the Civil Rights and Feminist movements following McCarthyism. A shrinking share of the American populace (overwhelmingly white) is incredibly paranoid and reactionary and simply can’t accept an America where they don’t possess unchallenged privileges like they once did. Grifters, big business, and other invested interests have simply latched onto and helped to feed this bigotry as it serves a useful purpose.

None of this is new, of course. Reactionary politics and attitudes have existed for as long as civilization. They tend to play on the same themes: evil/depraved/satanic members of a hostile outside group or sections of an elite are seen as a fifth column, deliberately manipulating the minds of ordinary citizens into disobedience, and through purging those elements purity will be restored. It’s paranoid, conspiratorial, and only worsens through higher levels of inequality. It has manifested in countless Jewish pogroms, Protocols of the Elders of Zion, Nazism, McCarthyism, New World Order, Deep State, and the countless fanatical groups in America like the Ku Klux Klan, John Birch Society, and QAnon (to name just a few). American history is defined by countless episodes of such reactionary politics erupting into race riots, anti-Catholic riots, the Know Nothings, Dixiecrats, the George Wallace campaign, the South during and after Reconstruction, the widespread power of the KKK in the 1920s following the First Red Scare, the America First and Fascist sympathizers during the 1930s, and McCarthyism following the Second Red Scare.

Trump is merely a symptom; this reactionary fervor existed long before him and will continue after he’s gone. Since the first importation of slaves in 1619 through today, the US has seen nearly 250 years of racialized slavery, 100 years of segregation and terror, and just 55 years of legal equality and democracy for all Americans regardless of race. Of our 401 years, only 55 (14%) of our history has involved legal equality and voting rights for all - and even then, it’s been a constant struggle against racist policies aimed at perpetuating that racial inequality and exploitation through the War on Drugs. Opposition to federal intervention in welfare programs, education, and so on has always been based in hostility to the federal government’s tendency to promote civil rights when state and local leaders seek to suppress them. They aren’t truly for states’ rights or for a limited federal government, only when it comes to policies that pursue social justice causes like ensuring voting rights, providing welfare for all, and promoting integration. They’re hostile to public education, the media, universities, science, etc... because those institutions have been the most outspoken against their bigoted white, Christian America. That won’t change so long as they are wield power. And since they know their numbers are shrinking, the pressure to abandon or restrict democracy has been increasing each election; it’s why they have to pretend there are so many issues with voter fraud, that it’s due to Soros or the Deep State or NWO. It’s never that they actually lost fairly; they can’t and won’t accept that.
