It wouldn’t be a gray area if there was a guarantee as to whether or not the wounded would go back to fighting us. The only reason this is ever okay is because 1) it can (illegally) be used as a way to protect healthy troops and 2) it is not impossible that a majority of the wounded will return to fighting you.
