I wonder if he’ll outlive Strom Thurmond.

His 3rd lost election in as many cycles. Maybe he'll finally get the hint (but he probably won't).

I'm convinced he's immortal. Evil people are. Look at Trump: 74 years old, 250+ lbs, eats the diet of a 6-year-old, & yet he somehow hasn't managed to keel over from stress &/or a heart attack yet?

If he barely lost the GOP primary, then there must be some state legislative seats where he got a clear plurality of the vote. It would be a big downgrade but if he likes having a podium to opine from...

In most municipalities State legislator is an upgrade from County Sheriff (not as big of an upgrade as say, Congressperson, but depending on the powers of the state legislature in question, it's still an upgrade).

It also depends on the size of the constituencies. Sometimes legislative seats are bigger than counties, sometimes they are smaller than counties. In Arizona, a state legislator represents about 220,000 people, or one thirtieth of the state. But somebody elected county-wide in Maripoca represents 4.5 million people, which is over half the state's population. So it would be a big downgrade in this case.

Didn’t his deputy win though? Not that much of a change to Maricopa Republicans if #2 is presented instead of #1.

Friendly reminder here that sheriff should not be a partisan position, nor an elected position.

Yea, elected judges were a big progressive idea in the late 19th century. It is a terrible idea, if the Supreme Court was elected, than they would all have been thrown out of office after Brown v Board and Loving v Virginia. A majority of Americans at the time disapproved of those decisions. A majority does not have the right to discriminate against a minority.

This is probably it for him, unless he finds a special or municipal race to run in before 2022 or the 2022 AZ primaries are scheduled earlier than his 90th. A younger candidate might have a few more runs in them without another general election defeat, but running in one’s 90s has rarely worked out for anyone who’s not a medical anomaly.

There is a value to having an elected sheriff. It can keep a county board or executive from appointing a sheriff that will be in their pocket.

I disagree here.  I believe that Law Enforcement ought to be directly accountable to voters, and not a mere appointed flunky for someone else.

I do think Sheriff's should be term-limited.  There should be lifetime term limits for any elective office with the power to arrest and/or prosecute.
