Passing the executive orders may not change the public's perception that much. But if the headline becomes "Democrats Sue to Prevent President's COVID Relief Orders From Going into Effect," then Trump is going to win that PR battle.

I'm glad Dems on Atlas are focusing on the problematic part of this - that executive orders like this clearly have no standing rather than falsely calling it the defunding of social security like Twitter. It's a shame that Congress can't agree to something similar or slightly stronger.

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/511197-biden-says-trump-executive-orders-are-a-reckless-war-on-social-security

Quote
Former Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday called President Trump’s executive order to cut payroll taxes “a reckless war on Social Security.”

One of the several orders Trump signed from his private club in Bedminster, N.J., Saturday afternoon directs the Treasury Department to allow employers to defer payment of employee-side Social Security payroll taxes through the end of the year for Americans making less than roughly $100,000 annually.

Trump also said that he intends to forgive the deferred payroll taxes and make permanent payroll tax cuts if he is reelected in November.

In an emailed statement addressing the president's order, Biden said that such a move would “undermine the entire financial footing of Social Security.”

The point is that this doesn’t solve any problems.

Wrong.  Some of us actually believe in the rule of law, regardless of who's in power.  Do you?

Not really. I think for myself and don't always agree with the left. I've criticized AOC, Omar, Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, Justin Trudeau, Black Lives Matter, social justice warriors, anti-BDS sentiments, and intersectionalism on here many times before.

We all have our opinions on unemployment based on our circumstances. It doesnt incentivize people to work. Due to the fact unemployment offices which had workforce development were closed due to expansion of economic conditions.  People on unemployment want to get a second round of extension next year, when Biden becomes Prez. That wont happen, last time was tried in 2002 and Ensign objected to a unanimous consent request.  Even in a Dem Senate with Leader Daschle

So did anyone ever stop and think how this would work long term?

If Presidents can just pass financial regulation in any form they like through EO's....what exactly is deliberation or negotiation in Congress anymore and how would it work?   Wouldn't it render the whole system kind of a moot point when whichever party hold the presidency can just get whatever they want anyway?

The fact that nothing can be done in a speedy manner with already more than a hundred thousand dead speaks waves on how our system of government has failed. Lives are on the line, and yet there’s no possibility of apt action in a speedy manner. The only solution it seems is for the executive branch to conduct itself in a way that goes beyond what powers are textually stated to be available to them to get out of deadlock.

We’re going to end up with more dead and destitute because we still have an archaic system that can’t stand the heat once the pressure rises on it.

Doesn't matter, optics are all that matter and the optics will push Trump's approval up 5% minimum.

Which is why the headline needs to be "Democrats try to stop Donald Trump's dictatorial attempt to defund Medicare and Social Security".

As I keep saying, while our system of government is far from ideal, these problems do not come from the system. Our government is failing us, not because it was poorly conceived but because it is full of bad actors who are hostile to the very idea of functional government.

No matter what sort of government you have, if you fill it with Republicans (or any other set of abusive, bad-faith actors) and let them run it, it will not serve the public interest.

Perhaps he can get together with Susan Collins and release a statement about how they're "doubly concerned" at Mr. Trump's actions before they get down on their bellies, slither back to DC and resume licking his shoes.

Hopefully, if the election outcome is in line with current trends, people will stop defaulting to the tired "Democrats in disarray" takes and instead actually put some thought into their political analysis.

From my perspective as someone who does payrolls, the one good thing about this is that the deferral doesn't start until September, so there's sufficient time for the lawsuits to get started before I have to start worrying about it. It would be even better if it didn't start until October as that would mean I wouldn't have to worry about a hastily put together Form 941 for the third quarter. Incidentally, there's already a deferment available for the employer portion of Social Security, but that was enacted by Congress, not E.O., so employers won't see much benefit from Trump's proposal. (I only have one payroll client who is taking advantage of that deferment. No one who isn't having cash flow issues is using the deferment so as to avoid having a large lump sum due when the deferment ends.)

Nah, the system is working as it was intended. The Senate and Executive are both not representative of the people at large and are acting against their interests. The deadlock from a divided government means that overreach of powers is the only way to get things done, and that power is at the hands of the president. Same story we’ve seen in the administrations of Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, FDR, Barack Obama, and now Donald Trump.

The “bad actors” argument falls flat considering that Republicans consistently win the minority of votes yet have extended and bloated representation in our government.

Republicans wipe their butts with The Constitution whenever there is a Republican President, they're not textualist, originalist, fiscal conservatives, deficit hawks or anything they claim to be. They're crazed ideologues who want power and a king with unchecked power so long as that king is a Republican.
