I'm Doing You A Service, Dammit: Differences From Previous Local Elections (Part 3: May)
By Weatherboy

With results fully in for May's round of local elections, it makes sense for us to take a look at how things changed from October 2020.

NEW JERSEY
LAB+PAX: 53% (+22%), 42R (+11), 20S (+5)
DA: 43% (+17%), 34R (+7), 17S (+4)
FED: 3% (-19%), 4R (-8), 3S (-3)
LIB: 1% (-20%), 0R (-10), 0S (-6)
Others: 0% (+/- 0%), 0R (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

Though Governor Baglieri lost re-election, the DA still saw massive gains here, nearly the same as Labor. Poirot's deregistration and the Federalists' inactivity this cycle began to show here, and they lost tons of ground as seen in other races.

VERMONT
LAB+PAX: 55% (+33%), 79R (+48), 17S (+12)
FED: 20% (-13%), 31R (-20), 8S (-3)
LIB: 15% (-16%), 25R (-23), 5S (-5)
DA: 10% (-4%), 15R (-6), 1S (-3)
Others: 0% (+/- 0%), 0R (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

The only state where DA fell from October, Vermont was dominated by Labor this cycle, and its results were no surprise.

TEXAS
LAB+PAX: 49% (+2%), 80R (+6), 15S (-1)
DA: 37% (+30%), 64R (+58), 10S (+8)
FED: 13% (-29%), 6R (-63), 5S (-8)
LIB: 1% (-3%), 0R (-1), 1S (+1)
Others: 0% (+/- 0%), 0R (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

One of the bigger battlegrounds at the end of the campaign, Texas, despite the massive Labor effort made here, saw only minimal movement towards them, and they actually lost their Senate majority! DA's 11th hour surge here saw some of their biggest gains nationwide.

MISSOURI
LIB: 38% (+30%), 65R (+60), 14S (+12)
DA: 35% (+22%), 59R (+41), 12S (+9)
FED: 22% (-16%), 31R (-40), 7S (-7)
LAB+PAX: 5% (-36%), 8R (-59), 1S (-14)
Others: 0% (+/- 0%), 0R (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

The one state where the Libs did well, mostly thanks to a complete collapse of the Labor ticket. Meanwhile the Federalists, ostensibly the frontrunners at the beginning, fell flat as the campaign went on, with no real faces on the trail for them.

KENTUCKY
FED: 42% (-6%), 42R (-10), 13S (-7)
DA: 40% (+16%), 40R (+7), 17S (+8)
LAB+PAX: 15% (-10%), 15R (-8), 6S (-2)
LIB: 3% (+/- 0%), 3R (+2), 2S (+2)
Others: 0% (+/- 0%), 0R (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

"Unbeatable Titan Hal Harlan" turned out to be just a meme, as the DA surged in this state and snagged the Governor's Mansion with it. In an odd result, the DA holds far more seats in the State Senate than the Federalists, mostly thanks to narrow wins in suburban and urban areas across the state. Also oddly, the Liberals held their own here and even grabbed some seats.

SAN FRANCISCO
Nora Chu (LAB-PAX-LIB): 52% (-9%)
Elaine Hernandez (DA): 45% (+23%)
Stefan "Smitty" Smith (FED): 3% (-13%)
Others: 0% (-1%)

Despite a large alliance forming behind Mayor Chu, the combined party vote share went down by a good bit. Still, she won re-election relatively handily.

WYOMING
LAB+PAX: 69% (+13%), 28MP (-3), 15S (+4)
DA: 23% (+13%), 10MP (+9), 5S (+3)
FED: 4% (-13%), 1MP (-2), 0S (-4)
LIB: 4% (-13%), 1MP (-3), 0S (-4)
Others: 0% (+/- 0%), 0MP (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

Wyoming certainly loves Wynonna, though they seem to also like the DA a little bit more than they did before.

MONTANA
LAB+PAX: 57% (+11%), 30MP (+3), 15S (+4)
DA: 31% (+21%), 14MP (+12), 7S (+5)
LIB: 6% (-15%), 3MP (-8), 2S (-4)
FED: 6% (-14%), 3MP (-7), 1S (-5)
Others: 0% (-1%), 0MP (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

Montana shows pretty much what's happened all over. Huge DA improvement, some Labor improvement, and massive falls for the Libs and Federalists.

GUAM
LIB+LAB+PAX: 53% (-12%), 8MP (-3), 4S (-1)
DA: 45% (+31%), 5MP (+3), 2S (+1)
FED: 2% (-18%), 2MP (+/- 0), 1S (+/- 0)
Others: 0% (-1%), 0MP (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

The LIB+LAB alliance in Guam saw a lot of ground lost, but Governor Aguon managed to hold on relatively easily. Oddly, the Federalists suffered no losses in the legislature despite losing 90% of their previous vote.

UTAH
LAB+PAX: 49% (-1%), 42MP (-20), 20S (-2)
DA: 48% (+37%), 34MP (+30), 19S (+15)
FED: 2% (-14%), 3MP (-3), 1S (-5)
LIB: 1% (-18%), 1MP (-7), 0S (-8)
Others: 0% (+/- 0%), 0MP (+/- 0) 0S (+/- 0)

And the big one, Utah. This state saw so much back and forth, ending in the narrowest of Labor victories, with a tied Senate and 1 seat majority in the lower chamber. The DA's gains here were massive, and with Lumine's move to Utah, us here at the GCS would say that it's likely the state flips next time around.

OVERALL FOR MAY (Guam counted as Liberal only):
LAB+PAX: 433 State Legislators (-16) GAIN VT-GOV, NJ-GOV, LOSE MO-GOV
DA: 365 State Legislators (+209) GAIN MO-GOV, KY-GOV LOSE NJ-GOV
FED: 162 State Legislators (-195) LOSE VT-GOV, KY-GOV
LIB: 134 State Legislators (-6)

Liberal National numbers are mostly saved due to Missouri.

National:
LAB+PAX: 3,428 State Legislators
FED: 1,848 State Legislators
DA: 1,668 State Legislators
LIB: 1,370 State Legislators
Others: 0 State Legislators

Executives:
LAB+PAX: 30G, 2M
FED: 10G, 4M
DA: 10G, 0M
LIB: 3G, 0M

Overall, the DA looks as if they may overtake the Federalists this month, both in Governor's Mansions and State Legislators.

Interviews, Part I: A Sit-down with Spark

WB: Welcome into the studio, Senator!

Spark: Great to be with you Mr. WB.

WB: Alright senator, I suppose the first question on everyone’s minds right now is: why are you running for Governor?

Spark: The reason I am running for Governor is clear. Southerners, as evidenced through their preferences in public opinion polls and statements, are tired of the immense partisanship we have been witnessing. Incumbent Governor LT has not focused on the issues that matter to the average citizen and instead shifted attention to the frivolous. LT's past conduct in office has degraded the fabric of Southern society and the discourse continued to ramp up. I am running to decrease these partisan tensions and heal our region. I hope to bring together everyone across the political spectrum to confront the challenges of our time. Moreover, I have effective, pragmatic solutions that will work for all of our people and leave none behind.

WB: You touched on something I wanted to cover here too: you and LT seemed to have a cordial relationship in the past, what exactly happened that made you change your mind?

Spark: I have great respect for Governor LT on the issues and as a member of my party. However, his personal conduct is something that I cannot support.

Transparency is lacking on his part as well. Southerners deserve full clarity about things.

While LT has not been convicted of any crimes, he has escaped responsibility. That is something no Atlasian should look favorably on. I served time for my misdeeds and have never used the confines of my office for personal gain. It is important that we spur activity and not breed complacency with the current administration. Not enough is being done about the COVID crisis and the activity problem. I have solutions that can confront these challenges.

WB: What are those solutions?

Spark: I have specific solutions to tackle the COVID pandemic that involve the promotion of free vaccines and establishing mobile vaccination clinics across the Southern region. I will establish a new regional COVID board comprised of top officials from both parties to advise the Chamber of Delegates and myself about these matters. Expanding access to the vaccine is critical, and not all Southerners live in proximity to urban areas. Our rural residents will gain access to the vaccine through these mobile vaccination centers. We also need to do more to de-emphasize the politicization of the vaccine and masking. Getting a vaccine is a patriotic thing to do, and all Southerners should get vaccinated. The only way we can defeat this virus is through mass vaccination. For those skeptical of the vaccine, many people have gotten vaccinations for other diseases without consequence. Masking, is necessary and responsible.
As it pertains to the activity crisis, I will work to establish additional positions in the executive branch and open applications for the most qualified individuals based on merit. I also plan to engage and involve citizens more in the decision-making process of the Chamber of Delegates and Governor's office. I will create citizen committees that Atlasians can serve on to consult elected officials about the issues they are experiencing.

WB: So I take it that you are extremely opposed to the recent efforts to nullify several federal laws including vaccine and mask mandates? Do you think that those moves are mistakes?

Spark: Well, that is a great question Mr. Weatherboy. I stand opposed to any efforts nullifying federal efforts related to vaccination, but not masking. Masking should be left up to the regions, but I can affirmatively state that I will encourage masking for the South to best of my ability. It is a mistake to assume that personal freedom should be elevated above public safety during such a crisis. It surely is a balancing act between the two. I think we can accomplish both. If elected Governor, it will be my utmost priority to protect the welfare of Southerners.

WB: Aside from covid and activity, what other issues would you prioritize?

Spark: Other issues of priority include balancing the budget, protecting the sanctity of life, reducing electricity costs for Southerners up to 1/3 by establishing a regional energy authority, and expanding the child tax credit by 25%.

WB: There are some other candidates in the race currently, mostly on the left. What do you have to say to those on the left who may be hesitant to preference you?

Spark: To left-leaning and moderate voters, I ask you to consider your choices in this election. If we all split the vote, we will have no chance in this election and lose our chance to make a change. I encourage you to look at my record of finding common ground on expanding access for education, protecting the environment, and improving our infrastructure while making your choice. I have learned from my past conduct, while LT's behavior will inevitably continue. I will work with any Atlasian officeholder to bring the interests of the Southern region forward. My administration will counter the hyper-partisanship we have witnessed in the past year.

WB: Lastly, is there anything else you have to say that you feel that you haven't here?

Spark: Mr. Weatherboy, I appreciate you taking the time to conduct this interview. I thank the Gulf Coast Sun for their time today. I urge all Southerners to support my candidacy against division, partisanship, and unsavory tactics which do not serve to our betterment. As an independent thinker, I have brought many solutions to fruition for our region from the Chamber of Delegates to the Senate. I've worked with people from all parties and will continue that commitment to bi-partisanship as Governor. It is my firm belief that things will only get better if I am in office serving you. Thank you for your consideration, and Dave bless the South.

WB: Thank you for your time senator, and I’ll see you during the debate.

Interviews, Part II: With WestDem

WB:Welcome into the GCS studio, senator!

WestDem:Hello!

WB: So, Senator, let’s get right into it. How’s your term as PPT gone, according to you? Do you enjoy the job?

WestDem: It’s been great. The Senate has been greatly productive in getting bills from the floor to the President’s desk this term. We’ve passed legislation to loosen eligibility requirements, strengthen workers rights, and have even established a holiday in honor of two great Atlasian patriots: Nathan and Antonio V. We’re working on legislation to protect gun rights, make commuting cheaper for our drivers.

I enjoy the job very much, WB. And wouldn’t have it any other way.

WB: Honestly seeing the AWB repeal bill debate, I’m surprised you feel that way. There’s been a lot of pushback, even from within your own party, on the issue. In fact it’s assumed by some that it’s the main reason Scott has decided to retire. What’s different from your perspective than others’ perspectives?

WestDem: First of all, I’m saddened to see the President decide to retire. We’ve accomplished a lot under this administration, and I was looking forward to him running and getting re-elected, but I respect his decision and offer him my best wishes as he steps out of public life.

Regarding the AWB, it’s always been a contentious issue and of course there are strong disagreements within Labor over this. I wouldn’t necessarily say my perspective is “different”, but I welcome the debate and think it’s healthy for our party and country as a whole. The Senate in particular is a body of deliberation and discussion; having these debates in the open is no vice.

WB: Yes, but you seem to agree with the President that the argument got out of control, yes?

WestDem: The President is correct, and I believe certain Senators went too far in abusing the rules to block the bill. Accordingly, we are currently considering a rules change to remedy this problems and ensure a minority of Senators cannot overrule the wishes of the majority.

WB: Some are criticizing those actions though, saying that those changes constitute “tyranny of the majority”. What do you say about these criticisms?

WestDem: On the contrary, the current rules enable a tyranny of the minority. The Senate rules allow just 1/3 of the Senate to overrule the PPT. This can easily and has been abused to create a sort of filibuster like the one seen in the United States Senate. Such things are not how the Atlasian Senate should work.

In the December election, Atlasians elected Pro-Gun Senators, without regard for partisan affiliation. In addition to mainly Pro-gun Federalist Senators, they re-elected Senator MB, Senator Ishan, and myself, and all 3 of us have a consistent record of supporting gun rights. In October, Atlasian also elected a President who has always opposed the AWB.

It is undeniable, in my view, that gun control is a policy not supported by the majority of Atlasians. The people support the right to bear arms, and accordingly, we are executing the will of the people. That is the one of many roles of government. To use underhanded parliamentary tactics to impose minority viewpoints on the rest of the country is wrong, above all else.

WB: Alright, let's move on. With Scott retiring, the presidency is now up for grabs. Being so high-ranking, there's been some speculation around you running. Are you interested, and if not, who would you support?

WestDem: I have no interest in the Presidency. I’m a legislator, above all else. As for who I support, I’m very happy to see Senator MB throw his hat in the ring and he has my full support.

WB: At the beginning of this term, you created the new office of the Leader of the Opposition, to which you appointed Spark. Can you explain why you felt this new position was necessary?

WestDem: I thought it would be a nice gesture and way to reach out to the minority here in the Senate. I believe it’s important to give all sides a voice.

WB: And lastly, what legislation are you hoping to pass this term and next term? Aside from the AWB repeal, of course.

WestDem: My main priority is getting the budget done, and my hope is that we will have budget passed before President Scott leaves office. For next term, it all depends on who the President is, and what their priorities are. It also depends on what bills my fellow Senators write.

WB: Thank you for your time Senator, and best of luck in your upcoming election.

Interviews, Part III: Speaking with Scott

WB: Welcome to the studio, Mr. President!

Scott: Thank you, Senator. It's great to be here.

WB: So, I suppose I'll jump into it, how do you feel about your term as president? I know you just left office, but looking at it already do you feel that it was successful, or that there were things you felt were lacking?

Scott: Well, it wasn't perfect. I didn't get to complete certain policy initiatives on time, like the budget. I think the Feds have become far more partisan. And for virtually every decision I made, someone in Labor was telling me it's wrong.

Quite honestly, being a senator or regional executive is far more meaningful, fun, and freeing from intraparty pressure. Labor is a big family, you could say. And like any family, there are often rifts.

But I do believe I accomplished as much as I could in the time that I had, With this new Senate, the New Great Society Act - my and Senator WD's signature accomplishment - will be preserved. And I'm glad that we'll be helping millions of Atlasians with the expansion of our welfare apparatus.

WB: You mentioned the Feds becoming more partisan. Do you think the IRL partisanship leaking into Atlasia is endangering the game?

Scott: To a considerable extent, yeah. As I recall, somebody in one of the Atlas Discords linked to a study suggesting that Massachusetts Republicans, let's say, are further right because they take defeat after defeat and all their neighbors are liberals. The Federalist Party is obviously in a rut, and I don't think it's unfair to say that three years of Labor domination have disillusioned some people. The Right ran two very unpopular candidates, the one who didn't have a campaign thread getting more first preferences than the one who did.

WB: Do you think that what's happening in the South right now, things like nullifying acts such as the Jones Act, is them venting this frustration? And I suppose while I'm on the question, what actions do you think the government should be taking in regards to nullification?

Scott: Well, you know that Governor LT and AG Truman are both very polarizing figures. You kinda hate or love one or the other. If I were Attorney General, I would have taken a different approach than AG Truman did. And so I tried to resolve this on the floor of the Senate with a bill that would repeal the law preventing states and regions from changing packaging designs. Now I don't support screaming fart boxes for cigarettes. I've been very open about that. But nullification likely will become an issue. Senator Reactionary's new bar association is a nonpartisan group for people who want to practice arguing in the Supreme Court. And we are looking at several things, several cases that Senator Reactionary and I both want to see overturned.

WB: Are you willing to give an example of such a case?

Scott: Yes. One case we would like to challenge is San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez. This case essentially legalized discrepancies in funding for school districts via the estate tax. The court also ruled that education is not a right. Now anyone can see why that's ridiculous, discriminatory, and helped contribute to present inequities.

We also are in the process of investigating the Church of Scientology for its years of abuse. and how they try to skirt the law by doing what may be described as "barely legal" if not legal at all. We want to help a woman who recently left the church and told her abuse story. This new bar association is going to give victims a voice, and shed light on a dangerous institution that plagues part of society.

WB: Very good things you’re bringing out here. So is this your plan for your future in Atlasia? You did say that being a senator was more fulfilling job earlier, are you planning on returning to the senate?

Scott: I'm definitely exploring my options for April. Senator Ishan is stepping down and this is my old seat. I would stand a great chance of winning there. If you were to ask me what I'm leaning toward now, well, I would say a run is more likely than not at this stage.

WB: Alright. President OBD announced that you’d be staying on the NSC. What do you have to say about ongoing foreign policy issues in Taiwan and Ukraine?

Scott: First of all, Ukraine as far as we know has not been attacked by Russia according to our GM. Secretary wxtransit is working on an aid package to continue supporting the airlift—something that the Senate must and I believe will approve. But aggression from China will be called what it is. Our goal in the National Security Council is peace. That's why it's important we maintain this, as well as the Budget Committee, to bring senators in both parties together.

WB: Do you think the Taiwanese Crisis will be over soon?

Scott: As more countries sanction China's economy, it becomes weaker and weaker and as a result the PRC is losing on any gains it may have made from investing in Africa, which we recently learned to be the case, that Atlasia is indeed in a trade pact with several African countries. That's just another advantage we have over OTL. And China realizes this. I do hope to end the crisis this term, without sending a single foot soldier into battle.

WB: Is there anything else you'd like to talk about that I haven't brought up here?

Scott: I'd just like to add that I hope this new session proves to be far more productive than the last one was. Up to half the chamber frequently missed votes. We rarely saw amendments to improve legislation other than to stall or delay it. And when voting time came, senators would vote no on a bill after having ample time to debate it or voice their opinion! It was definitely Congress at its worst, but I'm hopeful that President OBD will work with a Congress that won't repeat some of the same partisan or ideological showmanship that we saw in the last couple sessions.

WB: Thank you for your time, Mr. President.

Scott: Thank you, Senator.

PPT WD said he created the Leader of the Opposition role to reach out to the opposition but his actions in this session prove that he never had that intention. It's more likely that he manipulated and lied to Spark to garner his support and encouraged that support by giving him that ceremonial-only role.

He says he cares about giving all sides a voice but that is clearly false because he used underhanded tactics to quickly table Federalist legislation this term.

The GCS is pleased to introduce the Senate vote map, showing the people how the senate votes on specific bills!

Here is one from the recently passed SB 108-29, the Stamping Out Racism Act.

A strong plurality of the new Senate will come from the South, it seems.
