2012: Barack Obama
2016: Jill Stein (Primary: Donald J. Trump)
2020: Unknown (Primary would have been Pete Buttigieg but the riots prevented me from casting a vote)

Senate

2016: Katie McGinty (would change with hindsight)
2018: Bob Casey

Governor:
2014: Tom Wolf (Primary: Tom Corbett's opponent who got thrown off the ballot after printing)
2018: Joe Paterno

House:
2014: Pat Meehan

I still preferred Trump in the two-party, but I figured it was a foregone conclusion he would lose, and I didn't want to support a loser so I made a statement by voting Green in protest for an important issue for a candidate that was pretty likable. I had some concerns about Trump post-Access Hollywood, but I think I realized that was all a hit job/media lie long before Election Day and the bigger thing was that he wasn't a winner (but that event could have contributed to that perception).

I was on vacation the week before election day so I was not following the last minute news that supposedly turned it, except for a few moments in an airport.

‘08 primary: Huckabee
‘08 general: McCain
‘10: did not vote
‘12 primary: did not vote
‘12 general: Romney
‘14 gubernatorial: Rauner (can’t remember who I voted for in primary; maybe Bill Brady?). This one was a tough choice for me since I still liked Quinn as well.
‘14 Senate primary: Oberweis? Can’t remember for sure
‘14 Senate general: Oberweis
‘15 IL-18 special primary: Flynn
‘16 presidential primary: Cruz (supported Rubio but had written him off by this point and just wanted to stop Trump)
‘16 presidential general: Johnson, but considered Clinton.
‘16 Senate general: Kirk
‘18 governor: Rauner. Unlike ‘14, not a hard decision at all.
‘20 president: Not sure yet, considering Biden or Jorgensen, or writing in Harambe or some other meme.
‘20 Senate: Literally anybody who is nominated to face Durbin

From my first election I could vote in (2010 midterms) to 2014, I marked the "Straight Ticket Republican" box in Iowa, but I will just list the major candidates:

2010 (IA-1)
POTUS: N/A
Senate: Chuck Grassley (R) over Roxanne Conlin (D)
House: Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) over Dave Loebsack (D)
Governor: Terry Branstad (R) over Chet Culver (D)

Record: 2-1, with my Miller-Meeks vote being a loser in Iowa

2012 (IA-1)
POTUS: Mitt Romney (R) over Barack Obama (D)
Senate: N/A
House: John Archer (R) over Dave Loebsack (D)
Governor: N/A

Record: 0-2, with my Romney and Archer votes being losers in Iowa

2014 (IA-1)
POTUS: N/A
Senate: Joni Ernst (R) over Bruce Braley (D)
House: Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) over Dave Loebsack (D)
Governor: Terry Branstad (R) over Jack Hatch (D)

Record: 2-1, with my Miller-Meeks vote once again being a loser in Iowa

2016 (IA-1)
POTUS: Hillary Clinton (D) over Donald Trump (R)
Senate: Chuck Grassley (R) over Patty Judge (D)
House: Christopher Peters (R) over Dave Loebsack (D)
Governor: N/A

Record: 1-2, with my Clinton and Peters (whom I know, and he's a wonderful guy!) votes being losers in Iowa

2018 (IA-1)
POTUS: N/A
Senate: N/A
House: Christopher Peters (R) over Dave Loebsack (D)
Governor: Kim Reynolds (R) over Fred Hubbell (D)

Record: 1-1, with my ever-naive Peters vote being a loser again in Iowa

Overall, I am 6-7 in my voting success, lol.  Being in Iowa City's district with a very popular Loebsack (whom my mother taught with for years and said is a fantastic man ... though she voted against him every time!) doomed me to always lose that race, it seems.

As for 2020, I haven't decided if I will vote yet.  I now live in the hilariously shaped IL-7, represented by Danny K. Davis.  However, because I am in an MBA program full-time, I can still identify as a student and vote in Iowa, which I will do if I vote at all, as I can see zero point in voting from my new location in Chicago.  If I do vote in Iowa, this is how I am leaning:

2020 (IA-1, Absentee)
POTUS: Abstain
Senate: Joni Ernst (R) over Theresa Greenfield (D)
House: Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) over Rita Hart (D)
Governor: N/A

A couple of thoughts on 2020
- I think for the good of the nation and the GOP, Donald Trump needs to be removed from office this November.  However, I also think a vote for Joe Biden is not really a vote for Joe Biden ... the guy is barely there.  Kamala Harris as POTUS doesn't excite me, and while I would overall prefer her losing to a GOP challenger in 2024 vs. Donald Trump having four more years, I will not help elect Biden/her directly.  I don't really care if that makes sense to anyone else.
- Mariannette Miller-Meeks is actually a very impressive person, and she comes across as a reasonable conservative ... gal cannot catch a break!  Loebsack finally retires and she's stuck in a terrible environment to have an R next to your name. Sad
- I likely won't bother voting.  I know that is like the biggest taboo on Atlas, but I have become quite disillusioned.

Noooo, we need the RINOs to cancel out "populist" Trump/Greenfield voters. Tongue In all seriousness, I can empathize with your sentiment (and I’m not voting for Trump or Biden either), but you and I are both in states where the down-ballot races are both uniquely important (much more so than the presidential race) and extremely close this year, so that alone is a good reason to get out and vote. Republicans obviously need to hold IA-SEN to even have a prayer of keeping the Senate and preventing a Democratic trifecta/Schumer from becoming Majority Leader under a (pretty much guaranteed) Biden presidency, so think of it as a midterm vote under a Biden/Harris presidency if that makes it less painful. Tongue Even if Republicans lose the Senate, holding seats like MT and IA will make it much easier for the party to take it back in 2022.

I’d also say your girl has the best shot in a long time in a high-turnout election with Loebsack retiring and the district trending a little Republican. It’s not an easy race by any means, but it’s winnable for the party (I didn’t realize this is the fourth time Miller-Meeks is running for this seat!).

I have always been registered in CA-07. Basically straight ticket D other than Johnson for president and a time or two when the top two in my state legislature races were both Republicans.

If this counts, then I also got my mom to vote for Hillary in 2008 even though she was an Obama supporter Tongue

Doesn't count unless you forge the signatures yourself Angry

In all seriousness, I see no reason why that sort of thing shouldn't count; it's not like I totally reevaluated my whole worldview the day I turned 18 (though I was certainly a very different person when I first began voting at, uh, age 10).

2012: Pres. Barack Obama, Rep. Charles Boustany
(strategic vote against Jeff Landry due to both being redistricted to LA-03)
2012 runoff: Rep. Charles Boustany

2015: Gov. John Bel Edwards

2016 (D) pres. primary: Bernie Sanders
2016 general: no vote due to left-wing disillusionment & too lazy to register yet in TX after moving
2018 (D) primary: Sen. Beto O'Rourke, Gov. Andrew White, Rep. Dayna Steele
2018 general: Sen. Beto O'Rourke, Gov. Lupe Valdez, Rep. Dayna Steele
2020 (D) primary: Pres. Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Amanda Edwards, Rep. Adrienne Bell
2020 general: Pres. Donald Trump, Sen. John Cornyn, Rep. Randy Weber

Had to dig up some old info, but I basically left the party last year, though I split the ticket for Railroad Commission Chrysta Castañeda. Louisiana elections are a hassle because of the timing. Texas elections are a hassle because of the long list of judges.

For president:

2002: Lula (PT) on both rounds

2006: Lula (PT) on both rounds

2010: Dilma (PT) on both rounds

2014: Dilma (PT) on both rounds

2018: Ciro Gomes (PDT) on 1st round, Haddad (PT) on the runoff

For congress and legislative seats on all spheres: it’s generally PSOL candidates but not really because I identify with them (the hard focus on cultural issues turns me off), mostly because other left parties lack better options with energy and excitement. Used to be PT in the past, in the 00s, but they distanced themselves from the base. PDT legislative options also aren’t exciting generally and for a longer time.

For Governor and Mayor: It sometimes works more as an “antivote”, I try to vote for a left party if I think they have chances but I have often voted for centrists or even right-wingers (mostly from DEM) in order to prevent worse options.

Basically my preference ranking when picking someone is/was: PT from old days > PDT > PSOL > current PT > centrists > moderate right.
