presidents that I like who I think did a pretty decent job overall:

Lincoln
Eisenhower
Washington
Reagan
Coolidge

some others who were less successful presidents for various reasons or had a more mixed legacy who i think are interesting and in some ways underappreciated:

Garfield
Adams
Fillmore
Nixon
Wilson

I don't have an actual top 5 because I think I have a top 4 but I struggle with the fifth.

So let's just troll instead:

1. Trump
2. Buchanan
3. W. H. Harrison
4. Garfield
5. Tyler

I have always believed that the most important legacy that a President leaves is his Supreme Court appointments, so here is my list on that basis, in chronological order.

Madison, because he appointed Joseph Story.
T. Roosevelt, because he appointed Oliver Wendell Holmes.
Coolidge, because he appointed Harlan F. Stone.
Hoover, because he appointed Charles Evans Hughes to be Chief Justice and Benjamin Cardozo.
F.D. Roosevelt, because he appointed Hugo Black, Felix Frankfurter, and he elevated Harlan F. Stone to be Chief Justice.

My earlier list has changed a lot. It included two people I would now place in the bottom half of presidents.
New list:

Lincoln
FDR
Washington
Jefferson
Obama

Honorable mentions: TR, USG, LBJ, JA & JQA, JFK, JRB

Chronological:
Jefferson
Jackson (Without the Trail of Tears)
T. Roosevelt (Despite his imperialism)
FDR (Even though the New Deal was too centralist/Japanese internment and 1944 might've been the only election that I would've supported him in).
Eisenhower (Despite his foreign coups)

Why Nixon? I'd say that I have a higher opinion of Nixon than the average American and I think that he would've been a good one had his paranoia not gotten the best of him, but he just seems different from some of the other ones you mentioned.
