1) USA
2) Brazil
3) UK

Steve Bannon had influence in recent elections in these 3 countries

They are also all notoriously "flexible" when it comes to truth and facts.

The correct answer is: a big population

The more relevant metric here is deaths per capita. And excluding micro states, the top 5 in this metric is:

1: Belgium
2: UK
3: Spain
4: Italy
5: Sweden

So I suppose what they have in common is that they are all in Europe or something.

Arguably that simply shows that Europe tends to have higher population densities - parts of the US and Brazil have been devastated by the virus in a way only occasionally seen over here.

You are correct, but we should also consider the stages of the curve. The pandemic is already in decline in Spain and Italy, the recent deaths are very low. Brazil is on a stable top of the curve, at thousand deaths each day, since the end of May. Probably it will start to decrease only in August. Brazil has 80K deaths. It will reach the number of deaths per million of Spain when it reach 130K deaths.

We also need to keep in mind that what counts as a COVID death varies a lot from one country to the next.

Another important issue. It is important to remember that the covid deaths in Brazil may be underestimated. In the early stage of the pandemic, there was shortage of tests. Some people had the symptoms, died and were burried without being tested. It will be important to compare the number of deaths by natural causes between 2019 and 2020
