I don't see how that can be done safely in most places.  I think we're gonna see a lot of schools do split scheduling with two days per week live, and three virtual, with half the school coming in Mondays and Tuesdays and the other half coming in Thursdays and Fridays, and heavy cleaning on Wednesdays and Saturdays.I

Some high school classes such as foreign languages will go fully virtual save perhaps for one day per week for testing.

Ivy league schools have already cancelled sports and USC and UCLA are close until further notice.

We are in a new era, online learning is here to stay

Yes, you know at some point more people are going to end up being driven to suicide as a result of these lockdowns and their associated effects like financial hardship, social isolation, alcoholism or drug addiction than are going to be killed by covid.

I don't see how its possibly going to happen before January at the earliest. Cases are rising, no vaccine, schools are one of the top breeding grounds for disease. It would be a disaster. I don't understand why Republicans are politicizing the "need to reopen schools". Anyone who reopens schools has blood on their hands.

No. .02% of children dying means 14,740 kids.

Depends on location. In Nova Scotia where we've only had five cases in the last month, all from out of province travellers, sure. In Texas or California? Hell no.

Unpopular opinion: Yes (but with social distancing and what not)

By September the pandemic will be controlled I think

In the US, we have classes which have 30 students in one class.

Yeah here too, I don't get this? (Here 35 students per class is the legal maximum in years 11-12; 30 for years 7-10 and 25 for years 1-6)

It will be a pain for schools but classes could be reworked around social distancing. Just sit everyone as though there was a exam.

At worst, make schools half in person, half online.

But by late September the pandemic will be at a low enough level that schools can reopen in a decent capacity, if not in full

Schools in my area just announced their plan. Basically: students can choose whether to go in-person or online, if going in-person, masks and distancing will be enforced.

Hot take ... if your opinions on "COVID" aren't almost entirely tailored to locales - ranging from "lock down!" to "you're taking away my freedom!" - you are probably doing it at least somewhat for attention or self assurance.  Lol, of course this answer should depend ENTIRELY on the location.

Nowhere in the US should, save some in places like Vermont and Hawaii. And speaking as a student, it’s pretty annoying that schools spent more time lying to themselves about their odds of going back instead of preparing for a worst case scenario so that online classes could’ve been made less of a nightmare.

Voted no with nuance. If trends continue to improve and school districts can implement distance learning for students with access and in-person learning for student who do not have access, then that should be a possibility. But if that is not possible, then no, they should not open.

No. I'm heading into my 4th year teaching middle school in MA and I still think we'll be doing some type of hybrid model.

My district's first day for students is August 31st, with teachers reporting on the 26th. I think I can handle having half students present, the other half online through a rotational schedule. I'm 25 and in great shape but I'm still worried for my parents (both late 50s) and my students and their families.

Masks are mandated per the state for kids above 2nd grade, but I'm scared of the potential of having everyone back at peak capacity.

It should depend on the situation in September, but school should definitely reopen before most other public spaces. The fact that some states have jeopardised full reopening by opening bars and restaurants first is scandalous. Education is more fundamental of a right than dining out.

Good luck getting a bunch of 1st graders to wear masks all day and social distance.

Wearing masks will admittedly be very hard, but I don't think social distancing would be that hard to keep outside recess? Basically, sit students as though they are going to have an exam all the time.

Of course, keeping social distance in recess for 1st graders (or really any students) will be impossible.

If I was designing a plan for schools to open it'd be like this:

1) Stagger recess times even more than usual and divide the school's courtyard so that classes or grades are segregated. If necessary, cut recess times or outright cancel it and have it inside the classroom, at least for upper grades. Or maybe do it on a day by day basis (so 1st graders get it on Mondays, 2nd graders on Tuesdays, etc)
2) Sit students as though they were going to have a test the entire time. This probably is not good social distancing but it is as good as it is going to get.
3) If possible, reduce the amount of students in class. This is easier for middle and high schools since they can go half online, half in person if need be; but harder to pull off for elementary.
4) A variation on 3, if time allows, divide grades into more groups than usual. If there are other spaces in the school where classes can be had, use them. When I was in like 1st grade I had my classes on what can basically be described as a glorified closet at one point. Use laboratories, the cafeteria, gyms, sports courts and if weather allows, even have classes outright in the open in the school's courtyard.
5) If someone at the school gets COVID, close down the school for at least a week, test everybody (or at least as many people as you can) and what not. Basically try to avoid people spreading the disease.

All of this, plus cases going down with good leadership should allow at least a majority of states to open up their schools by late September. Of course, the COVID pandemic would need to have good leadership and go away for good.
