Obviously we can see some Obama-Trump voters switching back because they were tolerant enough to vote for a black man, what about those who couldn't vote for a black man but will now vote for Biden. (Actually someone I know)

But maybe some of these were just right-leaning independents who hated Bush and would have voted McCain against any White Democrat. (and now have gotten too sick to bear with Trump's administration)

No matter how hard people try to strain for other explanations, the most plausible explanation for this voting pattern is clearly and obviously “racist.” And probably a bit sexist too.

Something being "the most plausible explanation" does not exlcude that other explanations are possible.

I could actually see this being my dad if he lied about voting for Johnson in 2016. He's a "casual Republican" who just wants good government and hated George W Bush and probably also hates Trump but might have taken a chance on him in 2016 but is now horrified by everything going on, and feels safe voting for Biden.

Someone who’s ex that they had a really bad break-up with was from Illinois and so they refuse to vote for anyone associated with the state.

Also racism/sexism works as an explanation too but that’s not as fun is it Tongue.

I can kind of see one of my aunts fitting this profile, although I think she was an Obama '08 voter. Someone who was a kind of conspiratorial Democrat prior to the Obama era, voted for Kerry because Bush lied and people died, but also thought Obama was a secret Kenyan Marxist and that Clinton killed Vince Foster. Now they're also also kind of believing some of that sort of stuff about Trump and while they don't really see much bad in Biden's history and are willing to overlook the rest. Couple this with getting older, needing to rely on more government support, particularly with regard to healthcare, and maybe getting some more non-white family members in the last couple of years, and it's enough to tip them back over to the Democrats.
