Speaking of the Islamist rule in Sudan, it's kind of mindblowing that Jaafar Nimeiry, who ruled from 1969 to 1985, started out as a Nasserite pan-arabist and ended as a Muslim Brotherhood supporter by the time of his outser. Unfortunately the Islamist types quickly reclaimed power, be it under the other guy, soon.
