Guys, Jimmy Carter wasn't a good president.
and? he tried and didn't actively f**k things up more than could be expected which is more than I can say for the rest (besides Obama but I like Carter a little more on a personal level, his political philosophy is also the one I agree with the most by far out of basically any president we've ever had)

I agree with the political philosophy of Herbert Hoover more than I did FDR. That doesn't mean Hoover was a better president than FDR.

Half the responses to this list is just evidence in support of my theory about how recency means you cannot fairly rank presidents because people put their partisanship before historical evidence.

This is going to be wild.
I am not ranking Trump as his presidency is still ongoing.*

1. Barack Obama
2. George H. W. Bush
3. Bill Clinton
4. Ronald Reagan
5. Richard Nixon
6. Jimmy Carter
7. Gerald Ford
8. George W. Bush

I tried to do this by making a composite index of rankings on various different things (of course it will be still full of bias). To be completely candid, positions 2/3/4 were a tie that I broke based on personality.

*technically Jimmy Carter is constitutionally eligible to become President again, so I have an argument not to rank him either, but that'd be too stupid lmao.

What’s so great about Carter’s political philosophy? He’s the President most responsible for the Democrats’ turn to the right, as his Administration began many of the neoliberal deregulatory policies expanded by Reagan, Clinton, and the Bushes.

Keeping with my dual rankings theme...

"Official"/"Objective" Rankings
1. Ronald Reagan (R-CA)
2. George H. W. Bush (R-TX)
3. Barack Obama (D-IL)
4. Bill Clinton (D-AR)
5. Gerald Ford (R-MI)
6. George W. Bush (R-TX)
7. Richard Nixon (R-CA)
8. Jimmy Carter (D-GA)

"Personal" Rankings (Don't use this for the average)
1. Ronald Reagan (R-CA)
2. George H. W. Bush (R-TX)
3. Gerald Ford (R-MI)
4. George W. Bush (R-TX)
5. Barack Obama (D-IL)
6. Bill Clinton (D-AR)
7. Richard Nixon (R-CA)
8. Jimmy Carter (D-GA)

Some Ramblings
- I think it's pretty clear that Reagan was the most effective leader and greatest President to hold power in this period ... but that's just me.
- It's hard not to let ideology get too much in the way of #2 through #4.  Bush and Clinton were very effective, and Obama was a mixed bag in this department.  I think Bush has been penalized too much for not winning reelection, and I think his Presidency was quite good.  Obama gets the nod over Clinton for the scandals of Clinton, pure and simple.
- Ford comes next due to not having the accomplishments to be higher but also showing the leadership and resolve in a tumultuous time, putting what he thought was best for the nation over his legacy.
- The last three are all objectively "bad" Presidents, historically speaking, but I personally think Bush had a better Presidency than Carter.  Nixon was hard to rank, but I put him in the middle.  While he disgraced the office, and it is my opinion that he SHOULD be last, his more positive legacies push him a hair past Carter for me.

Lol, I had just been reading a passage from a book about how LBJ torpedoed early civil rights legislation and then watered down later bills, so D-TX was on my mind. Smiley

Trump isn’t ranked due to being in office currently but if he was counted he’d be between Reagan and HW

Obama (IMO 2nd worst President of all time Wilson being worst) is lower than Nixon because Obama’s negative stance towards Israel. Nixon while corrupt and a progressive, stood with Israel at a critical time.

Give or take with the middle, 7-9 are the definite pits and Carter is probably the only actual good one of this lousy bunch.

9. G.W. Bush
8. Trump
7. Reagan
6. G.H.W. Bush
5. Clinton
4. Obama
3. Nixon
2. Ford
1. Carter

Week 5 results are in the OP.

Now that we have finished ranking the eras, we advance to the final ranking.  I will split the presidents up into sets based on their average rankings, and we will rank them from best to worst in sets.

First, we are choosing the VERY BEST ten presidents.  Select your top ten of these men.  Seven of them will drop down into the second tier.  There is no need to rank 11-17 although you can if you like.

If your favorite president (Reagan, Madison, etc.) is not in this top ten, they were never going to make it to the top ten anyway.  You have to guide the consensus by selecting only from the presidents who have a fighting chance of being in the overall Atlas top ten.  In general these are men who either finished in the top 3 of their sets or had a double-digit number of top-3 votes.

Week 6:  The best of the best (top ten)
Abraham Lincoln
George Washington
Theodore Roosevelt
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Barack Obama
Ulysses S. Grant
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Bill Clinton
James Monroe
Harry S. Truman
Zachary Taylor
Jimmy Carter
Lyndon B. Johnson
Thomas Jefferson
William Howard Taft
James K. Polk
James Garfield
