I knew for the first time in my life that the small european nation states of San Marino and Monaco exist because I used to watch Formula 1, when I was a child, and Ayrton Senna was driving.
In Monaco, there is the famous circuit on the streets of Monte Carlo. The Grand Prix of San Marino used to take place in the circuit of Imola, a Italian city which is located 75km away from San Marino, but since there is the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, the race in Imola received the name of the small state located near Imola. Formula 1 was my first reference of this two small states.

Yeah, I also knew about Monaco because of Monte Carlo Casino and the Royal Family.

I probably heard Monaco first in relation to that actress that married the Prince and then drove off a cliff, but I didn't really know what it was.  I learned about them playing Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II on a friend's Genesis.  So yes to both.

Lol I live in Northwestern Italy. They are both at 300 km from my home. I was on holiday in San Marino at 5 years old before I even knew what Formula 1 was. Not to mention that I have always been a geography geek. I liked atlases even in kindergarten.

No, I first heard of them when I was like seven years old and learning about geography.

I learned about Monaco and Grace Kelly from a video game, too, but in my case, it was through a slightly off-color reference in Space Quest IV.

No, I've always known about Monaco (family history stuff) and I don't know for sure when I learnt about San Marino's existence (which must've been before I was 11 at most)but it definitely wasn't because of F1

Monaco was because of the Prince or Monaco and Princess Grace?

San Marino perhaps, but is was one of those city states in geography that you learn early on.

Are you from Genova? Rapallo? Parma? The cities I found in the map which could fit these distances

La Spezia
It's literally in my signature!
(300 km was an approximation)

I previously knew that both of them existed.  Specifically, San Marino is supposed to be the world's smallest country, or at least among the world's smallest.  It apparently encompasses part of Rome.

From a fellow "geography geek"...geography geeks of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains.  LOL.  Wink

I knew about Monaco because of the nice casinos there.

San Marino is a relatively new country to me.

I knew about San Marino from writing to their co-presidents as a child and asking for a license plate from there. A few months later, I received plate "99999" in the mail, free of charge. 20 years later, in appreciation from this kind act, I took a series of trains and buses from Roma to visit this delightfully weird little country for a few days. The amount of money I spent on obscure alcohol there, some of which I still have in my extensive home bar 7 years later, more than offset the cost of this plate, so overall a win-win for San Marino's tax collection and for me.

Of course not. I'm an atlas poster. Enough said.
