Erdogan: proudly throwing back Turkey into the Middle Ages.

Disgusting.

There are 3 major mosques within 5 minutes of walking distance of Hagia Sophia, but no matter what they just shove it down the Christian minority's throat and tell them "Deal with it." because we can.

It's not really about the tiny Christian minority in Turkey. It's about moving Turkey further away from secularism and serving red meat to his Islamist base.

Erdogan is a patient man. For years he'd been saying he would leave Hagia Sophia as museum, until he finally felt he can just do as he clearly always wanted to do.

Bro, the one you quoted was literally built as a church, and only later converted into a mosque lol
Not to mention it was converted back to a church almost 800 years ago, lol.

"Christians did a bad thing in the middle ages so it's fine for Muslims to keep doing it all the way into the 21st Century" is one of the most tedious takes.

By this logic shouldn't the Spanish government turn the churches into museums to prove how secular they are?

I obviously don't like Erdoğan and I don't agree with this decision or especially the symbolism of it, but I don't really see what's inherently horrible about turning a former mosque back into a mosque.

I imagine they could make it function as all 3 (mosque, church, and museum) if they wanted to.

I mean, surely you're aware that the main reason why it has sadly not been used as a cathedral for so many centuries is ultimately a consequence of well...

That would entail actually looking after the building properly, which is the one thing that Turkish authorities of whatever ideological stripe have been consistent about not doing.

The 1st one is funny Tongue.

Although fun fact , the last Christian sermon in the Hagia Sophia was during the Greco Turkish war right after WW1.
