Because it's an all-around epic classic which restored my faith in cinema.

It's the only Academy Award winner I know of that had a ripple effect: it experienced no post-win bounce whatsoever, but other good movies from the era (As Good As It Gets, Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love, etc.) received a bounce, and box office receipts were up generally.

I didn't care much for the story. I thought it was a great movie since it brought the year 1912 to life, and the period 1870 - 1914 is my favorite period in world history.

Also, I didn't get emotional when Jack died, I got emotional when the woman was putting her children to sleep knowing they would die, and when the elderly couple were in bed as the water rushed in. After reading the details of many of the immigrants who died in the sinking, I was left feeling immensely depressed for several hours after that.

I just watched for the first time in my life. I always just assumed it was an overrated blockbuster that would completely bore me like so many other awful movies that capture preteen attentions. While it definitely borders on the absurd at times with how many improbable obstacles are overcome (they both should have died no less than five times), that is overpowered by some very iconic moments and the beautiful and heartwrenching devastation for a whole host of minor characters. Doesn't hurt that Leo stars at the absolute peak of attractiveness - that should be #1 reason to watch.

I had a co-worker who refused to watch the movie, because "I know what happens." The plot of the movie would present no surprise or novelty to him, so he did not watch it.
