Jerry Litton elected to the US Senate
November 3, 1976

Yesterday, Missourians went to the polls to elect an US Senator to replace the retiring Stuart Symington. US Representative Jerry Litton, a rising star in the Democratic Party, has defeated state Attorney General John Danforth by a close margin.

On August 2, Litton's plane crashed when he was going to celebrate his victory in the Democratic primary; he was lightly injured. This gave Danforth a boost, as did his campaigning with President Gerald Ford.

With all ballots now counted, the results are:

Jerry Litton (Democratic) 962,667 (50.3%)

John Danforth (Republican) 941,656 (49.2%)

Lawrence "Red" Petty (Independent) 9,446 (0.5%)

John Danforth has given a concession speech where he praised Litton's "charisma, intelligence and tenderness" while Litton promised to defend "the people, not special interests" as US Senator.

Looking forward to the timeline! Jerry Litton would have made a decent President and likely would have won in 1988 with up to 332 EVs and 51% of the popular vote. He would have done well in Appalachia, the Ozarks, the Rust Belt, and the rural plains states that experienced the worst parts of the 1970s and 1980s agricultural recession. Jerry Litton would have won Texas as well if Lloyd Bentsen was his running mate. George H.W. Bush I think would have picked up New York however and maybe done a bit better in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Even though he lost to Jerry Litton, John Danforth likely runs against Thomas Eagleton in 1980 and defeats him due to Ronald Reagan’s coattails in Missouri.

I hope people enjoy it as they did with the Harry Parker timeline (which I abandoned due to lack of inspiration)

January 4, 1977

Right after taking office, US Senator Jerry Litton (D-Missouri) has written a piece of legislation (titled the Consumer Protection Act) creating a Consumer Protection Agency to "protect the American consumer from corporate manipulator and fraud".

The agency will be empowered to punish bad corporate actors and protect the American consumer from them. According to Litton, it should get $2 billion dollars per year in funding.

Consumer Protection Act passes House of Representatives
January 16, 1977

This morning, the Consumer Protection Act, a bill by US Senator for Missouri Jerry Litton creating a Consumer Protection Agency, has passed the House of Representatives with 221 aye, 210 nay and eleven abstain votes.

Most of the CPA's support came from Democrats, although some moderate Republicans supported the bill; it was opposed by conservatives on both parties and a handful of liberals who thought it was unneeded.

It has been sent to President Gerald Ford's desk for signing or vetoing, although some think it's likely Jimmy Carter, who takes office on January 20, will sign the bill into law.

Gerald Ford vetoes Consumer Protection Act
January 18, 1977

In one of his last actions as President, Gerald Ford has vetoed the Consumer Protection Act, a bill creating a Consumer Protection Agency to "protect" American workers and consumers from monopolies.

Ford said the bill was "populist nonsense" and that America's antitrust laws were "absolutely" sufficient.

"I agree with the intention of this legislation, but it is populist nonsense of the type harmful to our democracy, and unnecessary as our antitrust laws are absolutely sufficient. Either way, I had to veto it"

Pausing this indefinitely, might resume the one based around Ralph Jenkins (one of my myriad fictional characters)
