Nixon honestly doesn't even look that bad anymore. His corruption is so quaint in hindsight and he actually had some positive accomplishments for the country's future.

It really says something about the state of our country that we’re saying: Nixon wasn’t that bad.

Not a Republican, of course. Even before COVID-19 he would have been close to the bottom among American Presidents. Maybe he would be above Buchanan for getting away without doing quite the damage. Buchanan may have fared badly, but who else would have done better in his role in history? The American Civil War may have been inevitable as early as 1857.

With COVID-19 we have the potential for charges of negligent homicide. Should there be any evidence of disproportionate harm to any ethnic or religious minority in America, then we might have charges good for the Hague Tribunal.

It's always possible that Trump will end up being seen that way as well. If the world goes to hell in ways that aren't directly traceable back to him, people might focus on the good economy and lack of new wars, and (with Republican encouragement) forget much of the rest.

If there's another, deadlier pandemic in the near future, it might make his COVID-19 numbers look not so bad by comparison, and the cultists can always claim that "if not for Trump's (really nonexistent) efforts, this new one would have been even worse". (Basically, the reverse of what Trump and his lackeys so clumsily try with Obama and Ebola and H1N1.) As for his lack of accomplishments... he's already been claiming credit for legislation Obama signed without significant pushback and his future cultists will doubtless do more of the same. (I.e. If UBI happens and is seen as a success, future Republicans will credit Trump's signature on one-time direct payment checks as the start of it, and give him credit for the whole program.) Plus, if you don't look too close, Trump looks sort-of like a GOP ideal: a hyper-wealthy self-made businessman and Renaissance man (real-estate, finance, televion, aviation - he's done it all!) who has turned his tough-talking, no nonsense, outside-the-box, alpha-male talent to public service. He presided over a massive business boom, while his unique approach avoided any new wars with hostile powers while still furthering diplomacy.

It's all nonsense that collapses into fractal awfulness once you start examining it, but there's enough of a shape of a positive story there that you can sell it to someone who wants to believe it. Anyone who says differently is obviously a democratic revisionist trying to smear Trump's name.  I don't think it'll actually go that way, though. There's too much audio, video, and other public digital records of him being an ignorant destructive jackwagon.

President Trump is definitely an "end-member of the spectrum". Democrats "worst nightmare" etc...

But interestingly, Donald will go down as one of the most powerful Presidents in modern US history.

His tactics with ignoring the media are a departure from the norm. Whereas Obama and Bush would make deals with the media and play the game, Trump will go down in history as the first President to ignore modern media and employ social media, in this case, Twitter, to message his constituents directly.

I initially expected this tactic to be fruitless, but it turned out to be quite a success.

Donald J Trump is also the wealthiest President, a TV personality so one would expect him to be remembered in history as the first "lying, stealing business manager" type to sneak through the political elite of the US and grab the torch.

This will have an impact in history on the nature of candidates to follow i.e. TV stars and wealthy billionaires.

Regardless of the whether the next elected President after Trump is Democrat or Republican, one would also expect the relationship with China to be more on US terms thanks to his aggressive posturing with Asian trading partners.

Historically, the epitaph of President Trump will come down to November 2020. If he is turfed out, then it will be deemed a failed experiment. If he is re-elected, then one could safely say that 8-year term Presidents are treated more kindly on their Wikipedia page.

"Donald J. Trump will go down in history one of the great presidents for his Valiant efforts at triggering the libs. Oh, and something something tough on China."

GW Bush has actually moved up noticeably in the rankings I linked to, from 35th out of 43 in 2014 to 30th out of 44 in 2018.   Nixon is in the same general area, ranking 33rd or 34th.'

Trump was way below both of them in 2018, and I imagine his reputation has only sunk further over the last 2.5 years.

Ahead of only Buchanan, even if he wins reelection.

Buchanan really did commit treason. With Trump, while I believe he did commit treason, there isn't really enough to convict him of that charge (without further proof that may come yet.)
