Given the Chinese government is bringing mainland-style tyranny to Hong Kong after making a solemn promise when Britain handed over Hong Kong in 1997, that they would respect its autonomy in accordance with the 'one country, two-systems' principle until mid-century, it is a fair question to ask:

Most of the west has known for a long time that China cannot be trusted to abide by international law or liberalize politically, but have looked the other way for economic purposes. Now reaping what was sown.

The economic calculus has changed. Serious movement towards punishing China is good from both a short-term and a long-term perspective now.
