I have the merger. As BRTD noted, Minnesota is a weird liminal zone, and I seem to have gone with the western variant.

Those three extra letters aren't there just to make spelling more difficult ..

Only two are.  If English had some mechanism to reform spelling, "caught" would be "caut".

The "gh" was pronounced back in the day and was pronounced like the German "ch".

I'm aware of that, but save for maybe a few very minor dialects, it's not pronounced now, so it shouldn't be in the spelling now.

English spelling is a crapshoot.

Not quite, but it is something only a philologist could love.

Isn't that like an Upper Midwest thing? It's like a very nasally accent. It makes Wisconsin sound more like Wiscansin (a as in can).

As to the question/poll, my answer is yes.

Eh, pretty much.

I'm sure you know of the "ghoti" argument. Now is that supposed to be "gotty", "oat-ey", or "fishy?"

What is it with Seppos not being able to say words properly?

If anything Court and Caught should be the bloody issue people have.

That's a different vowel shift, the Northern Cities Vowel Shift.

I recommend not trying to use English orthography to describe vowels (American English has, like, 14 monophthongs that we've for some reason decided to represent using 5 letters, let alone our diphthongs)... if you folks want to clarify, make recordings and upload them somewhere.

Yep, the definitely sound more alike than caught and cot

With me, none are the same (although the r does lengthen the vowel rather than being a hard r) but court and caught are way closer than caught and cot
