Jimmy Carter voted for president for the first time in 1948. Did he vote for Truman of Thurmond? Considering he supported civil rights since the beggining of his career, he probably voted for Truman. Truman won Georgia. In 1968, I don't know he voted for Humphrey or for Wallace. Wallace endorsed Carter in the 1970 Georgia gubernatorial election. I also don't know if Carter voted for Nixon or McGovern in 1972. We know that Carter and McGovern hated each other and that McGovern voted for Ford in 1976. But I don't know about the opposite. In the other elections, of course, we know that Carter voted for the democratic nominee.

Concerning the primaries, I know that Carter voted for Bernie Sanders in 2016. And of course, he voted for himself in 1976 and 1980. But I don't know how has he voted in the other democratic primaries.

Just get one of ten thousand books that he's written, you'll find the answer somewhere I'm sure.

Except for 1972, I have to think he has voted Democratic in all of his nearly 96 years.  In his initial autobiography Why Not The Best?, he talked about his family's active support for LBJ in 1964--which caused considerable trouble for him and his business that year.

As for 1972, McGovern's outcome in Georgia was abysmal (just 25 percent, which after Mississippi was his worst performance).  There were defections at all levels from Hubert Humphrey's vote in 1968--and Humphrey received only 27 percent in a 3 way race that George Wallace won.  That, and the mutual animosity between McGovern and Carter, wouldn't surprise me if he didn't vote Democrat at the presidential level.

1972 is a curiosity, as is 1968.  He praised him greatly at the 1980 convention, but did he actually vote for Hubert Horatio Hornblower?

LOL at the idea that Jimmy Carter voted George Wallace. That's insane. I also think that he voted for McGovern.
In the primaries I think it's reasonable to say that he voted Mondale in 1984, Clinton in 1992 and 1996, Gore in 2000 (?), Obama in 2008 and 2012 and I suppose Biden in 2020 given that Sanders didn't compete in Georgia. Idk about 1972/1988/2004.

I suspect Carter feared that McGovern getting nominated would result in Georgia voting Republican down-ballot.

Actually, I have to agree.  I was just thinking about how Carter needed to succeed politically in Georgia, and Humphrey hardly got any white votes in the Deep South, but Carter must have voted for Humphrey.  Carter was always racially progressive, and never seemed to have a racist bone in his body.

Yeah in the 1970 gubernatorial primary Carter adopted a message aimed at the more racist voters but it's pretty clear it was just a campaign tactic, as he demonstrated when he changed his tone sharply just after being sworn in. Even Leroy Johnson, who was the first Black state senator since Reconstruction, and who didn't endorse Carter in that primary, later said he supported Carter and understood that he had to adopt that image to win a state like Georgia.

Carter hated McGovern so he probably voted for Nixon in 72', there is no way that Carter voted for Wallace in 68', doubt he voted for Nixon too..
