Attacks on Communist will see the same retribution to the Nazis if they do not cease their violence.

Otto Wels, on the Presidential Election

We face a dire moment.

On one hand, the Nazis. Agitators, anti-Semites, madmen who seek to plunge us into another war and destroy our Republic. On the other, the Communists. Other than their opposite politics and inherent Stalinism, they are the same as Hitler's Nazis.

Neither Hitler nor Thalmann can be allowed to become President.

With no alternative, the SPD supports the re-election of President Hindenburg to stop Hitler and Thalmann.

Hindenburg Wins First Ballot: Second Round Necessary

The results of the first round of the German Presidential Election have been fully tallied. From Königsberg to the Rhine, the German people have put in their ballots, and the total votes are in.

Reichpräsident Paul von Hindenburg: 44.1%
Herr Adolf Hitler: 33.2%
Herr Ernst Thälmann: 18.5%
Herr Karl Borromäus Frank: 4.0%
Others: 0.2%

President Hindenburg has won a plurality of the vote, with Hitler in second and Thälmann in third, Frank in fourth. Hindenburg has won the ballot, though many note the highly disappointing margin with which he won, unable to net 50% or getting at all close to it. Though this is a Hindenburg win, the momentum feels entirely robbed from his campaign. Hitler performed beyond beyond most's expectations, securing over 30% of the vote. He was noted to carry many of Hindenburg's vote from 1925, winning much of his reactionary right wing coalition. Hindenburg's coalition was primarily made up of the moderate right, social democrats, and Catholics. He did win a solid segment of the reactionary vote, mobilized by Der Stalhelm, but there was indeed a flight to the Nazi ticket. The Communists performed quite well, over doubling their 1925 performance, Ernst Thälmann leading the Communists to over 18%, shaking the foundations of German politics with their Marxist-Leninist platform. Overall, the establishment of Weimar politics is certainly shaken to its core. The second round looks to be even more chaotic. The question is now whether every candidate will proceed into the next round, perhaps even if the President wants to continue his campaign.

Interview with Carl Schmitt

Q. What do you believe is the biggest threat to the German Volksgemeinschaft?

A. The greatest threat at the moment, quite simply, is the disorder in our political and social community. This disorder, and the failure to respond effectively to it, flows directly from the failure of the government to exercise the power of the sovereign and step in to take what action is needed to bring order back to Germany. Really, this is a deep rooted problem, as the much ballyhooed "liberal constitutionalism" seeks to undermine and replace the basic concept of a sovereign leader capable of acting to save the nation with a framework based around abstract laws, which can never be utilized to truly bring needed order. Disorder, then, is the inevitable consequence of a too liberal constitution and political discourse.

Q.  What do you believe should be the ideal replacement of the Weimar system?

A. I make no secret of the fact that I think there are a great many flaws with the Weimar system, but I do think it contains the tools of its own salvation if we are only willing to use them. The state of exception found in the constitution can be used by the President to, in essence, take what steps are needed to restore order by going outside the parliamentary system, which is fundamentally unable to adjust and grapple with what is in essence an inevitable by-product of overly liberal government. We must be willing to recognize that our normal legal means are incapable of controlling the present chaos, and the state of exception is needed to give to the President the powers he needs to step outside of the ossified and decidedly inert political system.

From this state, we must create a nation where the right of the sovereign to rule in times of emergency is respected and normalized. We can do this within the structures of the Weimar system, but I do fear it is becoming increasingly difficult to save the system from itself. Any new government must, if nothing else, provide the sovereign with the power to step outside the law to ensure order. The rest, truly, is superfluous. It is a powerful sovereign that is needed for any system of government to function, and it represents the only difference between a proper nation state and a militarized debating society.

Q. Who do you believe should lead this ideal state?

A. Within our current structure, of course, we have the President, and should we act to save the Weimar system and the social substructures underpinning it in time, we can likely keep things largely as they are. I do fear that is, at this juncture, largely impossible. But be it in a new system or in a preserved version of the current, the head of state, whatever their title, must be sovereign, and therefore be able to take what we might call extra-legal or dictatorial action to ensure order in times of discord such as these.

Q. Why do you believe that Germany lost the Great War?

A. My knowledge of the Great War is mostly limited to my service as a volunteer in it. I must confess that I have largely left the scholarship of the war to those who make the study of such things there primary profession, and from them I gather a combination of domestic betrayal and several other factors brought about the defeat. I would leave that question, however, to Herr Hitler, Herr Hugenberg, and indeed perhaps Herr Hindenberg, who have in different ways much more to say on the subject, much more insightful things as well.

Q. Do you believe that Germany should aspire to acquire Germanic lands such as the Polish corridor, Austria, the Sudetenland, Alsace-Lorraine, and even more?

A. Politics is, ultimately, the exercise of antagonism, of the conflict between us and the other across societies, of dichotomies between friends and enemies. To that end, the Germanic peoples can and must be seen wherever they reside as a cohesive political entity. That is not to say that an Austrian a Germanic Pole are of one political mind, but rather that within their respective political entities, Austria and Poland, they serve as one grouping in conflict with others as part of political society. I hesitate to offer policy in areas of which I know little, and the acquisition of land is a discussion best left to others, but I do think that it is only natural that we should desire that those we see as our closest friends and brothers be brought into a cohesive German nation.

Adolf Hitler

Hitler, speaking from Munich confirmed that he would continue on to the second round of the Presidential Campaign.

Hitler called on Herr Frank and President Hindenburg to suspend their campaigns, citing Frank's low support, and his strength among Hindenburg's supporters.

He then spent the rest of the month campaigning across Germany.

Herman Goering, Gregor Strasser and other top Nazis also campaigned across Germany, repeating a similar platform to the first round.

Alfred Hugenberg - A vote for President Hindenburg is a vote against Socialism

In his first public appearance since the first round results were published, Alfred Hugenberg thanked all Germans who went to the polls and voted for the banner of Hindenburg, calling the results of the first round a great win for all patriotic forces. However, Hugenberg said, it is even more important for everyone to vote for Hindenburg in April, in the second round. He said that the Hindenburg campaign is the last line of defense against the socialist forces, and only a vote for Hindenburg will defeat Bolshevik Socialism, Democratic Socialism and National Socialism. He promised for the DNVP and Der Stalhelm to take a more active role in the second round campaign in order to ensure the survival of Germany.

Hitler response to Hugenberg

Campaigning in Frankfurt, Adolf Hitler said in response to Alfred Hugenberg's comments that only a vote for President Hindenburg was a vote against socialism, by calling Hindenburg "senile" and saying that if Hugenberg wanted to do something about the issue, he should have run for President himself.

He called on Hugenberg to change his endorsement from Hindenburg to himself, citing his younger age, and relatively close alignment to Hugenberg's political views.

The speech of Alfred Hugenberg in Kiel - 14th March

Good evening, Kiel! Thank you all patriotic Germans for coming here tonight and thank you all for voting in such great numbers yesterday for the banner of President Hindenburg! It was a great victory and I am so proud of our results! However, in April, there is an even greater danger looming over our country. That is the danger of Socialism. Bolshevik Socialism, Democratic Socialism and National Socialism are all sides of the same rotten, red coin! And their effect will be the same - an abandonment of what makes Germans to be Germans. The values of faith, family, tradition and the very soul of this nation. Socialism wants to take all of those values away from us and change them to suit their own disturbed visions. They also want to abandon the Kaiser, the only worthy leader of this nation, in exile as they grow their own personal power. We will never allow it! And the only solution to stop the socialist plague from ripping our soul is to reelect President Hindenburg! If he is reelected, a Hindenburg Government will end this Republic of Jews, Usurpers and Communists and he will bring back the Kaiser. We will also end the foreign countries taking our money, our land and our people away from us, and we will create Greater Germany! We will also end the communist threat once and for all! So join us, for only under the banner of Hindenburg we can make our country whole.

Comrade Thälmann Addresses Supporters in Berlin

Quote
Good evening, comrades! The final tally from the first round of voting is in and I couldn't be happier with the result! I want to thank the 6 million men and women of the working class who voted for a better future this afternoon. Your vote has sent a clear message to the capitalists and imperialists in Berlin: The working class will be silent no more. Based on this fantastic result, I am officially announcing my candidacy for the second Presidential ballot in April!

This result would have been impossible without the support of hard working German men and women across Deutschland. Since the founding of our Republic, the working class has cried out for leadership from the political and capitalist class in this country. They have found none in the parties of the center.

The KPD is the only party offering a better future for the working class of Germany. Our plan will eliminate unemployment, raise working class wages, and begin an economic recovery that will propel Germany down the road of socialism.

Brothers and Sisters, that is the rallying cry of our times: hope. Our political situation is dire to be sure, but it is not unsolvable. With the right ideas and the right leadership, the German working class can enjoy a future free from the oppression of capitalist exploitation and militarist slaughter. As President, I will dedicate the German nation towards a  peaceful and prosperous future under the banner of socialism.

My opponents, President Hindenburg and Herr Hitler, have nothing to offer you but lies, slander, and recrimination. President Hindenburg has failed to solve the economic crisis during his time in office. Government after government has fallen due to infighting, chicanery, and treachery. We cannot trust our current President to end our economic and political crisis under these circumstances.

Hitler, on the other hand, offers national annihilation at the hands of the imperialist West and the Russians. He has committed himself to the dubious ideology of capitalist militarism. His allies are murderous generals from the Great War, who failed to win any great victory for Germany and sent millions of our brothers to their graves. His plan would turn the working man into an automaton, further enslaving them to the capitalist system and turning our brothers into human machinery.

The German people must choose between socialism or barbarism now. Today, I am asking every German to choose hope over fear, socialism over capitalism, and peace over war. Together we can build a truly socialist future.

- Alfred Hugenberg is going to make a tour of Germany, visiting every major city in the North and in East Prussia before the German people submit their ballot in April. He will hold at least a rally every day. Every speech that he gives will be published by his newspapers.

The speech of Alfred Hugenberg in Schwerin, 19th March

Hello, Schwerin! I am so glad to be here, and thank you all for going out to the polls and voting for President Hindenburg in such large numbers last week! He is a Great War hero, a man of great integrity and has the best political beliefs - he is a Monarchist, a patriot and a staunch anticommunist, and this is why me and my party are supporting him with our entire force. And today I want to speak to you about the threat of Bolshevism. Because this is the true danger we are facing in this day and age. And all candidates, other than President von Hindenburg, are Bolsheviks at heart. Only President Hindenburg will fight for Germany to be safe and prosperous again. Only with him we can go back to a stable government, one in which the thieves and usurpers in the Reichstag will not have the authority to dictate our lives anymore. I know that many who hold this beliefs have voted for another banner last week, however that is not the way Germany should take. Because National Socialists are just that. Socialists. And once in government they would act according to their Socialist beliefs. President Hindenburg on the other hand will not allow Germany to fall even further, and will end the influence that Bolshevik Jews and foreign countries hold over our country. So in April, vote for the only candidate that will make Germany whole.

Presidential Election of 1932

Custom

Campaign Season II

The first round is over and the second round is just beginning. Hindenburg's disappointing margin in the first round had led some to speculate that he was dropping out, though it is rumored that General von Schleicher, General Beck, and the President's own son Oskar urged him to continue on, saying that if he dropped out there would be a mad power struggle that could lead to Hitler or even Thälmann winning it all. In that spirit Hindenburg has applied to contest the second round, but as has Hitler and Thälmann. The fate of the Reich remains very much in the air.

Reichpräsident Paul von Hindenburg: Independent
Herr Adolf Hitler: NSDAP
Herr Ernst Thälmann: KPD

Hindenburg is a strong favorite to be reelected, but if the Social Democrats nominate their own candidate everything could be thrown into chaos. Perhaps giving Hitler an opening to pull out an unthinkable win, and give him access to dictatorial authority. The winner of this election will be able to pick the next Chancellor and hold great power. But it will be up to the voters.

Presidential Election Second Round: 10 April

Second Round results will be calculated and released July 14th or 15th, until then, campaign! You can still declare a candidacy for the second round, but please do soon. Candidates can also drop out but that's up to you. Remember to try and appeal to a broad base if you want to win, coalition building is everything. Results will be determined by a dice roll, quality of posts, historical precedent, and in game political alliances and maneuvers. Best of luck!

Quote
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Herr Frank for his endorsement in the second round. When the working class is united behind a common goal, nothing can stand in our way. The KPD is willing to work with any party that supports the German working class. Thank you Herr Frank for your support!

Ernst Thälmann Campaign Schedule, Second Round

March 14:  Comrade Thälmann spends the day resting in Berlin, meeting with Party leaders and strategists to prepare for the second round of voting.

March 15th-March 18th: The campaign embarks on a 3-day tour of Berlin and Potsdam. Thälmann meets with union leaders, striking workers, and small shopkeepers who are victims of recent right wing violence.

Quote
Comrades, the devastation visited upon Berlin by the fascist forces of Hitler and Hugenberg is unacceptable! How can we trust President Hindenburg to protect our brothers in the working class while he hands power to thugs and criminals? If elected, I pledge to stop the tide of right wing violence gripping this country. Until that day arrives, I am instructing the RFB to protect the workers of Germany from the fascist mob.

March 19th-March 26th: Thälmann turns west, campaigning in regions historically favorable to the Social Democrats, with visits to Westfalen Sud, Hessen-Nassau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Aachen, and Dusseldorf West. The candidate visits miners in the Ruhr and takes questions from local reporters. Meeting with members of the Socialist Workers Party, the candidate issues a clarion call for left wing unity in the race for the Presidency.

Quote
I am humbled to stand before you today as a representative of the working man in German. The KPD is the only party offering a better future for the working class in Germany. I ran for Reichspräsident because I believe that the only solution to the great political and economic crisis of our time is working class solidarity. By empowering the German worker and building a truly socialist German, we can end the chaos that grips our country and end this capitalist Depression once and for all!

March 27th-April 1st: The campaign travels to Northern Germany. Thälmann gives speeches in Kiel, Bremen, Hamburg, and Wilhelmshaven, to throngs of supporters. He announces a new policy aimed at reviving the moribund shipbuilding industry in the region and joins workers on the picket line. Thälmann and his entourage end the trip in Stettin with a rally in the central square.

April 1st-April 8th: The campaign returns to the east, visiting Leipzig, Dresden, and Chemnitz. Thälmann addresses founding members of the Independent Social Democrats and reiterates his call for working class solidarity.

Quote
Brothers and sisters, with the campaign nearly at an end, I come here today to ask for your support in the spirit of unity and friendship. In the past, I have been quite critical of the Social Democrats and of the other left wing parties across the country. Such criticism was necessary to prevent an unholy alliance with the capitalist robber barons or the fascist mobs in the streets.

But in this moment, we can no longer pick and choose who are friends and who are our enemies. I welcome the support of Social Democrats and Liberals. We live in a moment where solidarity matters above all else. Solidarity against Fascism. Solidarity against hunger. Solidarity against capitalism! If you oppose the bloodthirsty militarism of Hitler, if you think President Hindenberg has failed to protect the German nation, I urge you to vote for me and join our campaign. The German people have a choice between the radiant light of socialism or the growing darkness of modern barbarism. Which side are you on?

April 9th: Thälmann returns to Berlin for a short day of rest.

April 10th: The campaign ends with a flurry of interviews, speeches, and public appearances. Thälmann gives remarks to reporters from across Germany and ends the campaign with a final radio address from Berlin. Rallies and marches are held in the streets, Thälmann sets up soup kitchens outside key KPD precincts, and KPD-affiliated unions organize a worker’s march to the polls.

Otto Wels

March 15-25: Wels campaigned for Hindenburg in heavily SDP areas, attempting to counter Thalmann. He blasted the KPD as 'Red-painted nazis who'll sell us to Moscow and Stalin at the first chance.' He also notably went after Hitler's Nazis, declaring them to be the single greatest threat to Germany today. In quit, he also worked on the left of the SPD, pointing out that Hindenburg was the best of three bad options; at least they could be assured they wouldn't be hunted down and imprisoned

March 26-April 3: These days were seen to internal politics as well as those of the Reichstag. He formally appointed Kurt Schumacher, a champion of the party's left wing, as his Deputy Leader and Spokesman on Finance.

April 4: In response to Thalmann's appeal to Social Democrats, Wels slammed the KPD leader as a Stalinist and authoritarian:
Quote
What is the only difference between the Communists and the Nazis? They paint themselves different colours. They all believe in suppressing dissent. They all believe in destroying our country to suit their own form of egomania. They all believe that they and they alone have the only solutions to the Depression, and all others are traitors to be hunted down.

If we are to even have a chance of the future, we must stand against the ideas of radicals and egomaniacs.

April 5-10: Wels campaigned in SPD strongholds, attempting to drive up support for Hindenburg in those areas.

Statement from Comrade Thälmann on Herr Wels's Recent remarks
Quote
Quite frankly, it baffles me that a purported 'friend of the working class' is openly endorsing the failed policies of President Hindenburg over a campaign of and by the German working class. Movements are more than their leaders, and I hope the rank and file of the SPD will embrace my candidacy. In this Presidential election, the KPD is the only party advocating for a socialist future for Germany.

Adolf Hitler

Hitler spent the final days before the Presidential election campaigning in Northern and Western Germany.

His top members in NDSAP, Herman Goering and Gregor Strasser campaigned for him in East Prussia and Southern Germany.

All campaigning was done on the same platform that has been done to this point.

Hugenberg continued to hold rallies promoting a reactionary platform and claiming Hindenburg is the only anti-socialist candidate in Northern Germany and East Prussia. He accused both Hitler and Thaalmann of being covert Bolsheviks who would bring mayhem and destruction to Germany while Hindenburg would restore it to its former glory. He hinted that a renewed Hindenburg term would mean the end of the Republic and a ban on communism.

Adolf Hitler

Speaking in Munich, Adolf Hitler responded to the Alfred Hugenberg's accusation of his being a Bolshevik by saying that the only Bolshevik in the race was Thaalmann.

He also said that bringing Germany's former glory did not strictly require bringing back the Hozerhollen monarchy, just restoring Germany's reputation in the world, and that he was the best candidate to do that.

Alfred Hugenberg responds to Adolf Hitler by asking him if he is really not a Bolshevik then why would he put radical socialist Gregor Stasser in a high ranking position in the NSDAP and his campaign given his well known support for harmful, USSR-inspired economic policies that would lead to a new, devastating hit from which the German economy might never recover?

Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler, speaking in East Prussia, defended Gregor Strasser, pointing out that Thalmann was "more of a Bolshevik" and that Strasser would have little ability to affect the Government's policy in the Government Hitler was envisioning for Germany.

Ernst Thälmann Addresses Herr Hitler's Remarks on Gregor Strasser
Quote
Herr Hitler has let the mask finally come off! His remarks today confirm what the KPD has said since the very beginning: The NSDAP is a degenerate perversion of socialism. Hitler has tossed Herr Strasser to the wolves in a feeble attempt to placate his capitalist puppeteers. We urge all working Germans to reject the false socialism promised by the Nazi's. They have no intentions of aiding the working men of Deustchland.

The Hindenburg campaign will organize counter rallies to communist manifestations

The Hindenburg campaign will start organizing counter rallies to any events attended by Ernst Thalmann. There will be anti communist speeches given just as the KPD has a rally and right next to the place where it happens. Violence shall be avoided, as the goal is to prevent the communists from giving their message to voters rather than to beat them up, and shall only be utilized in self defence.

Alfred Hugenberg responds to the remarks of Adolf Hitler

In response to the most recent remarks of Adolf Hitler, Hugenberg had this to say - It sounds like Herr Hitler is trying to balance the desires of his anti-communist voters with his communist ideology. It is clear that Gregor Strasser will play a key role in any NSDAP government and that even by itself shows that the National Socialist Party is socialist and Bolshevik. The DNVP will fight against any government which Herr Strasser, who is almost as bad as the KPD, is a part of.

Prof. Carl Schmitt Endorses "A vote for any sensible and responsible candidate"

Prof. Carl Schmitt, when asked by a local reporter on his stoop, who he wanted to win the upcoming second round of the Presidential election, he maintained his refusal to endorse one candidate. He did, however, urge for unity on the right.

It is the ultimate goal, of all of us on the German right, to restore order and decency to our nation. I cannot say between Hindenburg and Hitler who I prefer, I leave it to the voters to choose between the two the one they find more sensible and responsible. So long as either Hitler or Hindenburg is elected, their shall be hope for Germany. We cannot allow a radical to become President and perpetuate our present crisis. We need a President who will take decisive action, and I hope to be able to aid whoever is elected in taking those steps that are needed to save our Republic from itself. The enemies of order cannot be allowed to take the office of the sovereign, for they shall render all our means of recourse impotent in the face of overwhelming institutionalized radicalisms. Vote for one of the two sensible candidates, and let us retain some hope for the future of our nation.
