Election Day

Voters are going to the polls as this edition of THE REICH goes to print. Lines wrap around street blocks as party activists watch to measure turnout, and party activists desperately court undecided voters headed to vote. So far things have appeared to be the most peaceful yet, with the exception of some markedly bloody clashes between the RFB and the AK Stahlhelm in Berlin. As for turnout is appears high, if not as high as the last federal election. The unique nature of the election, with only 143 seats up for grabs make it more interesting. It's very possible that the party that gets the most votes will not be the largest party in the Reichstag.

As the voters have begun to cast their ballots there have been scattered reports of voters being denied a ballot due to inadequate registration status, as well as polling places simply being unmanned, or moved to another town. While these reports are rare, and could simply be marked down to happenstance, they are more common than any previous election. However, this election has been far more peaceful than previous elections, and violence has been largely avoided between warring paramilitaries.

The results are expected soon.

Hugenberg gives final speech at rally in Eupen Malmedy

My fellow Germans,

First of all let me thank you for coming to this event in such high numbers! This truly shows to everyone the power of the patriotic movement, and this is only the beginning!

We are standing here today in the place of what is the biggest national accomplishment since this cursed Republic was proclaimed. The reunification of Eupen Malmedy with its Fatherland. The thousands of fellow Germans who were being kept away from their country by the criminal treaty of Versailles brought upon us by the Jews and Communists rebelling behind the lines are now finally part of the Reich. It is truly a moment of great celebration, and I am sure we will properly celebrate in a few short moments.

However, we can not stop here. We must not rest until Germany is reborn and reformed to include all of its people who were unfairly separated from it! I will not rest, the DNVP will not rest and the patriots in this country will not rest until Germany is back to its former glory! That means getting our territory back from these foreign invaders! We hold the fact that Germans belong in Germany to be self-evident, and will soon be reality too!

Germany is off on a path of national revival, despite all of the Bolshevik strikes, Fascists coups and attempts to govern the country by various paramilitaries and Trade Unions! Despite all of them trying to destabilize us, this Ministry is still delivering real results for the people! And on February 6th, you need to vote for those who actually have results to recommend them instead of demagogues. For patriots who wish to protect the independence and prosperity of the nation, not for socialists who want to dismantle them! I call to all of you and the German people to vote for the DNVP, the party who can and will revive the German eagle! Thank you!

Hugenberg returns to Berlin to coordinate the organization of the election

The Vice Chancellor is back at the Interior Ministry coordinating a task force and being permanently in touch with officials in the country to see how the vote is going and if any problems arise.

Ending the Campaign: Thälmann Delivers his Final Address at the Berlin Sportpalast
Quote
Brothers and Sisters, thank you for such a warm welcome this evening! With the end of the campaign in sight, now is the chance to make our final case to the people of Deutschland.

I stand before you as a man who has spent his entire life fighting for the working people of this nation. As a child, I saw firsthand the intense hardship that comes with being a working person in this country.

My father worked as a farmhand for the first twenty years of his life, tilling the soil for a manor house outside of Bremen. He ardently believed in the value of hard work, but every day he would harvest far more wheat and barley than his daily pay reflected. Later in his life, he owned a small pub in Hamburg, making a living selling drinks to hardworking dockworkers. He faced economic hardships all his life, and his story is no different than the millions of men and women who work for a living across this nation.

For too long, the capitalist class has robbed the working man of their rightful pay and their rightful place in society. Their economic power has consigned our brothers and sisters to poverty, hardship, and destitution. Comrades, it is unjust that a man who works so hard should earn so little! So many of our families starve while the powers that be enjoy unprecedented prosperity.

But listen to me, brothers and sisters: we have the power to transform our country and build a better Germany! We refuse to accept failure of the capitalist system. We refuse to tolerate the corruption of the political and economic elite. Instead, we will chart a new course under the banner of German Socialism!

We pledge ourselves to economic recovery! The political elite of Wels, Hugenberg, and Von Papen have proven themselves incapable of ending the depression that grips Germany. Under the KPD, Deutschalnd will have new leadership that is capable of sustaining a broad working class recovery! We will support our farmers, our miners, our shopkeepers, and our workers through rational management. No longer will powerful factory owners or manor houses trample on the factory worker or the small farmer. We pledge to provide a livable wage to every German worker and full time employment to every adult German!

We pledge a return to national unity! A KPD government will unite the German people, both within and outside of the Republic. We will stand together as one, against the capitalists and the political elite. We will revitalize the political life of this nation by enshrining the rights of the German worker into the Constitution. We will create a worker’s Republic, where farmers and factory workers alike have a powerful voice in the Reichstag.

Brothers and sisters, through German Socialism, we can build a nation and a government that is worthy of its people. With you as my witness, I promise to lead Germany into a red dawn of socialism, one which will end our national destitution and humiliation. Comrades, let us go forth tomorrow and vote for a better future and a better Germany!

The KPD is dismayed by claims of electoral malpractice. Free and fair elections are crucial in any democracy and we cannot allow even the hint of impropriety at this critical hour.

We urge the Interior Minister to guarantee a free and fair vote. We demand nonpartisan volunteers and election workers be dispatched to every understaffed polling place at once.

Federal By-Elections: The Results

From every corner of the German fatherland the votes have been counted. From Stettin to Munich, from Cologne to Königsberg, from the mountains of Bavaria to the soft banks of the Rhine, the German people have made their final decisions. The 143 seat pool formerly held by the illegal Nazi Party have been reallocated, and an all new Reichstag of 646 deputies with a majority of 323+1 has been convened. The result of the by election and the composition of the Reichstag are listed below.

By-Election Results (of 143)

Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD): 35
Deutschnationale Volkspartei (DNVP): 27
Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD): 24
Deutsche Zentrumspartei (DZP): 15
Deutsche Staatspartei (DStP): 14
Vaterländische Union (VU): 13
Partei der Revolutionären Nationalsozialisten (PRNS): 9
Bayerische Volkspartei (BVP): 5
Nationale Landbund (NLB): 1

Full Composition

Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD): 149 (+24)
Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD): 132 (+35)
Deutschnationale Volkspartei (DNVP): 122 (+27)
Deutsche Zentrumspartei (DZP): 93 (+15)
Deutsche Staatspartei (DStP): 59 (+14)
Vaterländische Union (VU): 41 (+13)
Bayerische Volkspartei (BVP): 28 (+5)
Partei der Revolutionären Nationalsozialisten(PRNS): 9 (+9)
Nationale Landbund (NLB): 7 (+1)
Deutsche Volkspartei (DVP): 4
Deutsch-Hannoversche Partei (DHP): 1
Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAP): 1

The nature of this election is fickle. Because only 143 seats are up for grabs, the party that gets the most votes may very well not receive the largest share of the seats. That is exactly what has happened. Despite the Communist Party winning a comfortable plurality, winning by our 6% over the DNVP, they are only the second largest party, trailing the Social Democrats by almost 20. However tonight is an unquestioned triumph for the left, especially the Communists who have easily one a plurality of votes, and if this was a normal election would have a comfortable plurality of seats. However it is not a normal election. The von Papen Ministry has suffered a blow, but it has been in much, much worst straits before. The government has a comfortable majority of seats. Powered by a growing loyalty of the middle class, the German State Party, the Patriotic Union, and the Zentrum all secured gains for the government. However Zentrum performed badly in terms of the popular vote, with the German State Party peeling off several Catholic voters due to their commitment to the Vatican Concordat and support for the Wittelsbachs, and the BVP peeling off Catholic voters due to their steps towards a Bavarian monarchy. Zentrum Chair Ludwig Kaas has stepped down and he has already announced he wants former Chancellor Brüning to succeed him as chair of Zentrum. The Strasserist PRNS did well, and some believed that they took some left-NSDAP votes from the KPD, although that is not clear. The DNVP performed well, coming in second in the popular vote and third in seat total. They did well with farming constituencies, and in the non-Berlin Brandenburg area. On the whole this election makes the Reichstag whole again, but also opens up more questions on the future of German politics. Reports of election misconduct existed (mostly in SPD leaning areas), but they were not as uproarious as earlier predicted. Here is a breakdown of the results by popular vote percentage, and a breakdown of political alliances.

Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD): 24.67%
Deutschnationale Volkspartei (DNVP): 18.54%
Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD): 16.51%
Deutsche Zentrumspartei (DZP): 10.78%
Deutsche Staatspartei (DStP): 10.01%
Vaterländische Union (VU): 8.33%
Partei der Revolutionären Nationalsozialisten(PRNS): 6.1%
Bayerische Volkspartei (BVP): 3.33%
Nationale Landbund (NLB): 0.63%
Deutsch-Hannoversche Partei (DHP): 0.42%
Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAP): 0.31%

German Rebirth League
Deutschnationale Volkspartei (DNVP)
Nationale Landbund (NLB)
Deutsch-Hannoversche Partei (DHP)

Vorbeck-Kaas-Held Pact
Deutsche Zentrumspartei (DZP)
Vaterländische Union (VU)
Bayerische Volkspartei (BVP)

Mahraun List
Deutsche Staatspartei (DStP)
Deutsche Volkspartei (DVP)

Today, Vice Chancellor Alfred Hugenberg has thanked the voters for the amazing result they have given to the DNVP, saying it is truly an honor to enjoy the support of millions of people around the country. He also said that the Von Papen Ministry is honored to be given a supportive Reichstag by the German people and that it will work harder than ever to restore the greatness of Germany.

The DNVP has today submitted to the Reichstag the Relief to Farmers Act

The content of the legislation is as follows -

1. The creation of an agricultural subsidies program meant to cover 50% of all costs faced by farmers in their work. If they want to access the subsidies, the farmers will have to lower the prices of crops by 25%.

2. Additional subsidies and legal facilities shall be granted to farmers who wish to create agricultural groups to support each other

3. All debts owed to the government or private enterprises by farmers of up to 5000 Reichmarks shall be immediately cancelled. For those who owe larger debts, their amount to pay shall be lowered by 5000 Reichmarks.

4. Tariffs of up to 20% shall be placed on all agricultural goods

5. There shall be a moratorium on foreclosures for farmers until June 1934

6. The government shall fund a program to help farmers expand to use cultivable lands that are not currently utilized.

Victory! The KPD Celebrates a Momentous Vote
Quote
I want to send my sincere gratitude to the millions of KPD volunteers, activists, and supporters who made this amazing campaign possible. You deserve all of the credit for this historic victory and I am so thankful for your generous support these past few months.

The cause of German Soclalism grows stronger by the day. More and more Germans are awakening to the failed leadership of the political and economic elite. We are building a mass movement of everyday German workers across our country. Our cause represents nothing short of an end to poverty, destitution, and exploitation. We are united by our struggle, our values, and our shared national heritage.

Brothers and Sisters, thank you for your support in this campaign. The struggle continues, the hope lives on, and the cause of German Socialism shall never die!

Thälmann Addresses the Reichstag
Quote
Comrades, Brothers, Gentlemen: I am honored to stand before you at this new opening of the Reichstag.

We have much work to do if we are to regain the trust of the German worker. The capitalist Depression marches on, with no sign of relief for the millions of men in the unemployment line. We have suffered through four years of brutal economic destitution and desperation. I urge my colleagues to support the National Recovery Act!

We need to make massive investments in our nation and protect our workers from the oppressive influence of foreign speculators. Our bill would end the Depression, bring millions of idle men back into the workforce, and provide a livable income for every German. It would banish the twin vultures of deprivation and poverty from our land. Brothers, now is not the time for austerity! We must give the people food, not wretch it from their hands! Join me in supporting the National Recovery Act

Now I must turn my attention to more contentious matters: some have proposed a referendum on the status of the Monarchy. We oppose this proposal. Brothers, we live in a free Republic! We cannot allow the opportunity for the old Kaiser to return and pillage our lands anew.

More specifically, we call out the Social Democrats for their support of this measure. Their leadership publicly supported the imperialist Great War, a product of the Monarchist system and the Kaiser's militarism. Friedrich Ebert himself stood with the Kaiser time and time again, even calling in Monarchists to put down working class demonstrations in 1919. By calling a referendum on the Monarchy, they may well prefer Kaiser Wilhelm's rule to working class solidarity.

Above all, brothers, let us protect the working man, the farmer, and the destitute. They, too, are our brothers and I support any measure that supports them. Thank you.

Von Papen

I think we can all agree that suppressing the Nazi Party is a good thing right? However, I noticed that a formal ban on Hitler's political testament, Mein Kampf, was not included in the bill. Now I read that book, and it said in graphic detail exactly what he planned to do to both Germany and to Europe. I believe if we are to permanently defeat Nazism, we must prevent it's ideas from spreading, and that means doing repugnant things like banning books. I call on the SPD to add a ban on the sale and possession of Mein Kampf and any other work of literature by a Nazi to their bill.

While the KPD's recovery plan looks nice on paper, it simply costs more than Germany can afford to spend at this time. As such, I encourage all parties to vote Nein, on the KPD recovery plan.

Hugenberg presents a plan to cut taxes on everyone

Today Alfred Hugenberg presented a plan called "Hugenberg's Tax Cuts Act" which involves a 7.5% cut in income, property and corporate taxes. He said that it will help solve Germany's economic catastrophes and urged all parties to support it.

Von Papen

I like tax cuts. I think everyone likes tax cuts. However, they cannot be the only solution to bringing Germany back to work. We need to cajole the business leaders of Germany into hiring more German workers if we are truly going to recover from our economic depression.

I am furious that the Reichstag has rejected our modest proposal to rebuild the German economy and save the German worker from the brink of starvation! Why is it that Right is willing to support the German farmer, but not our hard working laborers and their families? I'll tell you why: because they're bought and paid for by the factory and mine owners! They are hapless pawns ripe for capitalist oppression, pure and simple.

Germany will only recover when the working men of this nation recover! We will not allow the capitalist class to rob the German people of their rightful wage any longer. We reject starvation! We reject poverty! We reject the failure of the German political class to protect the people of this nation from foreign speculators and capitalism.

We cannot allow the incompetence of Chancellor Von Papen and his loyal lapdog Hugenberg to stonewall economic recovery. The capitalist Depression will only worsen until the Government takes this crisis seriously.

Von Papen response to Thalmaan

The problem with your recovery plan, besides the barely disguised Communism, is that it does nothing to keep German workers employed. There is nothing in your plan stopping German business from hiring a bunch of workers for two weeks and then firing them again. That's not good for the economy either. While your plan promises guaranteed work for Germans, there is no enforcement.

If you present a revised plan, removing the minimum wage provision and working hour provisions and add an enforcement mechanism for your guaranteed work promise, I will direct the Government to vote in favor of it.

The Reich

Wikimedia Commons

The Worst is Over

As the summer approaches and the spring comes to an end, the temperatures are up, and the cities are buzzing with activity, experts, observers, and Reich officials have noted that things are looking up. While the nation is by no means prosperous, things are better than they were a year ago. Unemployment has dropped substantially, crime has dropped, and the nation is more stable, the government in particular. Chancellor von Papen has lasted for over a year, far more than many expected. The consensus is clear, the worst of the Depression is past.

While the nation is definitely not prosperous, nor the common people that well off, the country is certainly in a better position than it was just a year ago. The German farming sector has been brought back from the edge of oblivion, and the end of the strikes have returned blood to the arteries of the nation.

However, the nation still has many questions to answer. A referendum on the monarchy seems inevitable. It is a only question of when it will be held. Then if it succeeds, who will take the throne? Will it be the Kaiser-in-exile? His son? One of the Crown Prince's own children? Or will the Republic survive? And what of the Communist Party, what action will they take? These questions swirl in the beer halls and streets of the Reich.

Meanwhile, there are still some sources of concern. The Communists, despite attempts to hide it, are increasingly militant. Some say they are far more armed than the Nazis ever were. The Nazis, still exist yes. Just yesterday there was a bombing in Cologne at a local Synagogue, and a wood thatch-work of a swastika was burned on the front steps. Reinhard Heydrich remains at large. And despite the economy's recovery, millions remained with a job, begging for their daily bread on the street.

Germany goes on.
