Quote
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Thursday made a distinction between taking down statues of Confederate leaders and those of past U.S. presidents who were slaveowners.

Pelosi has spearheaded an effort to take down 11 statues in the Capitol of Confederate leaders but stopped short Thursday of disavowing statues of President Thomas Jefferson and President George Washington, whom some activists say should no longer be enshrined since they owned enslaved persons.

"It's not about Washington and Jefferson, it's about Alexander Stephens," Pelosi said at a Capitol press conference.

<Snip>

Former Vice President Joe Biden also distinguished between statues honoring the pro-slavery Confederacy and other historic figures who have fallen out of favor. In a press conference Tuesday, Biden said the federal government has an obligation to protect certain monuments, like Washington and Jefferson.

I'm going to have disagree with Pelosi and Biden here. If you were a slaveowner you should be unpersoned from society.

Pelosi was the chair of the DNC host committee when her mayor Dianne Feinstein raised the confederate flag.

If you were a slaveowner you should be unpersoned from society.
You aren't interested in what year they were slaveownere in, how many they owmed, hpw they treated them, or how vocal they were politically about defending and expanding slavery? If they went to war specifically defending slavery? No context necessary, just black and white?

I'd like to believe our society has evolved beyond venerating slaveowners.

All three of these posts are ahistorical at best and purposefully anti-intellectual at worst.

The question we have to ask is if they built their careers and legacy around violence against this nation or its modern inhabitants. We shouldn't be celebrating those people.

For example, Woodrow Wilson was a racist but that wasn't what his legacy was. His legacy was beginning the creation of the global financial system, the notion of world peace being something that should be actively pursued, and that the government should be restructured to be more relevant and responsive to change.

Well, yes, there is.  Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Wilson, and a number of other prominent American figures did some bad things, but you could talk about them without reference to that.

This is Biden's position, along with keeping Columbus up (which I disagree with personally). As for Confederate statues, he says they should be taken down peacefully and put in museums.

What to do with John Tyler then?

I have an idea of where Pelosi would go with him, considering she took down portraits of Speakers of the House who had any connection to the Confederacy, even those who were not mainly known for their Confederate connection.

Good, Democratic leaders needed to weigh in on this to set reasonable boundaries within public discourse now that the conversation has finally shifted in our favor on this issue. A segment on the left has declared open season on all historical figures and it’s been getting out of hand, completely losing the thrust of the original message over problematic veneration of Confederate figures.

Don't forget the one who joined the Confederacy when he was 16 in the 1860s and then became speaker in 1890.

If you're referring to Carlisle, I argue his later loyal service to the US outweighs his Confederate service.  After all, he was 16 when war broke out.

Would you support demolishing the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial? Because that is where your line of thought leads. Your viewpoint would have it that we would subscribe the memory of most of our Presidents up to and after the Civil War. Such a proscription would also include Ulysses S. Grant, who owned slaves at one point in his life.

When did Carlisle serve the Confederacy? The Speaker in question is Crisp.
