No, would have voted Carter reluctantly in 1980 and Mondale enthusiastically in 1984

This is living proof that a lot of people who left the GOP over Trump don't just bring their existing views to the Democratic camp; they actually become more liberal.

Same in the reverse direction too

Of course, I just didn't have an example of that to point out.

Almost certainly not in 1980 and probably not in 1984, but my state went to Reagan in '84, so if he got enough liberals to vote for him, I might've been swept in. At the same time, I would've supported Dukakis in '88.

Nope, never. Would have voted against him in both of his presidential bids and all three of his gubernatorial ones.

Why did you assume that #TheShadowAbyss would have been a Republican before 1980 rather than being a Democrat who would prefer someone to the left of Carter or disliked Carter for a non-ideological reason?

A young middle-class white-collar college grad who in this scenario grew up during tough times in the 70s? More probable than not. That said I might have been repulsed by his union-busting tactics. Would probably like him for the same reasons I abhor his policies now, perspective would be completely different.

I did in 1984, the first election in which I was old enough to vote.

Me too and I would bet so would most of the people here if they were of age in 1984 no matter what they say now.  My politics and the world have changed over time but at the time it seemed an easy choice that a large majority of people made.

Probably not in 1980, but probably yes in 1984.

Anderson would have been my preference in 1980.

1984 is trickier. My suspicion is that the Ferraro pick would have removed any temptation to vote for Mondale. It's funny that people forget how much of a disaster she was, arguably the most damaging running mate between Eagleton and Palin.

Why was she so damaging and a bad pick?

41% made a different choice, not an insignificant amount. You act like he won by a Putin margin.
