I remember a Friends episode in which Ross tried to list all the 50 states, he could list only 49 because he forgot Delaware.

If you ask an American to list all the 50 states, without checking on Google, will Delaware be usually the last one in the list (before Joe Biden, of course)?

Delware does not exist. It's a fictional state created by the DuPonts to f**k with the fiscal authorities.

In that same episode, Monica says nobody cares about the Dakotas. So they're up there as well.

I'd say South Dakota is moderately memorable, even to the average American, simply because of Mount Rushmore.

I found out now, there is a comedy conspiracy theory "Delaware does not exist" https://delawareness.tumblr.com/

It is similar to "Acre não existe" in Brazil. Acre is a small state in the middle of the Amazon forest. It is the home state of Marina Silva, who was at the third place in the presidential elections of 2010 and 2014. But Acre does not exist.

In Germany, there is the Bielefeld does not exist.

No. It's literally the first state. The most forgettable state is obviously Arkansas by a wide margin, followed by Idaho (possibly flipped for Easterners.)

I mean, with the obvious exception of Kansas City, an awesome city.

Anyway, Delaware easily is for me.

Sporcle provides us with a glimpse into how above average Americans perform on this:

1. Missouri (77.2%)
2. Connecticut (78.2%)
3. Minnesota (78.6%)
4. Massachusetts (79.6%)
5. Nebraska (79.7%)
6. Wisconsin (80%)
7. Maryland (80%)
8. Delaware (80.5%)

Caveats - the user would have a blank map in front of them. Each of the first four could arguably chalked up to a spelling error - though you would think Minnesota less than the others. Could the answer actually be Minnesota? Probably something on this list.

There is a quiz in sporcle that makes you name all the 50 states. And in their answer statistics, it is Minnesota who is named the least.

If I forget about any state, it’s Delaware.  (I live in a forgettable state in the heartland, so maybe I’m biased. Tongue)

Arkansas is the least mentioned in pop culture, I'm sure.

I remember Wyoming "last" because I remember all of the states in alphabetical order. I memorized a certain song I was taught in grade school called Fifty, Nifty United States.

I remember my whole class in 3rd grade had to sing this at a school assembly. It's how I recall all the states to this day.

Anyway, I'd bet there's probably some regional variance on what states people remember most and least. I remember Delaware easily because I'm almost directly north of it, but I think I'd probably have the most trouble with a Deep South state if I weren't singing the song.

In Italy, we have Molise does not exist.

(Molise is a small region who was created in 1963 that is after all the other ones)

What is this Delaware? It would be nice to have an even 50 States, but we could get there by admitting Puerto Rico. Until then, we'll just have to continue with our current flag.
