An interesting activity I thought of. What I mean by this is how their voting patterns line up with the stereotypes of current demographic voting patterns. For example, I would list Vermont towards the top of being idiosyncratic, as it is a white, rural state that votes Democratic. Meanwhile I would list Georgia low on the list for voting how you would expect it to, with suburbs zooming left, Black majority areas voting Democrat, white rural areas just getting more Republican, and the odd college town to shake things up.

Montana also has to be near the top. A very white and predominantly rural state that still has a very strong Democratic Party. Especially since Democrats are pretty much extinct in all of the neighboring states. Also West Virginia, since a number of Democratic legislators still hold districts that voted overwhelmingly for Trump.

To some extent, the reverse is true in Connecticut and New Jersey, where there are some moderate Republicans are in suburban Clinton seats.

The least idiosyncratic are probably Alabama, Mississippi, Nebraska, and the Dakotas. The former two are just super racially polarized, and the Plains States are purely white, rural and very Republican.

I would call New Hampshire and Iowa idiosyncratic on the basis of their extreme elasticity.

Utah is also idiosyncratic: the deeply Republican state that doesn't like Trump.

Alaska has to be at the very top, with Montana, Louisiana, Maine, and New Hampshire being in the top 10.

Missouri has some of the most typical voting patterns of any state IMO--so much so that it's almost atypical.

Pretty much. It will only get more typical, too - just waiting on St. Charles County and the northern KC suburbs to realign.

I would put at the top Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, Montana, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
I don't know which states are less idiosyncratic, although Idaho, Nebraska and possibly Kansas seem to be politically pretty boring.

By the way
Have you ever noticed that when they poll religious attitudes by state, religiosity seems to be roughly inversely proportional to distance from the Louisiana/Mississippi border?
(Obviously with a big, big exception called Utah)

Hawai'i in any case is the most culturally distinct state by a country mile.

Going off elasticity, 3rd party performance, and general weirdness:
1. Alaska
2. Maine
3. Vermont
4. Montana
5. Oregon
