Aka repealing prop 209, will go on ballot in Nov and will almost certainly pass to bring back Affirmative action.

If there wasn't such institutionalized racism built into the system there wouldn't need to be affirmative action.

This *may negatively affect Asian Americans. Perhaps CA adopts a racial quota system soon

Straight up quotas are unconstitutional per Bakke. If Cali tries to force the issue back to SCOTUS they will ban affirmative action without Kennedy.

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/story/2020-06-09/california-repeal-prop-209-affirmative-action

"Despite our position as a global leader, this law has allowed discriminatory hiring and contracting processes to flourish in California. The result is that the number of women and Latinos employed by the state of California has decreased significantly relative to population growth. In 1994, Latinos were admitted to the UCs above the average rate, and African-Americans at 6 points below average; in 2019, they were admitted at 6 points and 16 points below average, respectively. Asian American admission rates went down, and have not returned to previous levels, especially at the most selective campus in the UC system. For example, before Proposition 209 in 1996, the Asian American admissions rate at UC Berkeley was 32%. Two years later, it was 30%. Currently, it is 21%."

I agree. This is really pushing it. SCOTUS will nuke this in a heartbeat, as they should.

No one is proposing quotas. Don't listen to the white nationalists.

"Since Proposition 209’s passage, California has become one of only eight states that do not allow race or gender to be among the many factors considered in hiring, allotting state contracts or accepting students into the state’s public colleges and universities."

"By the early 1990s, California had become one of the top-performing states in terms of contracting with women and minority entrepreneurs. But in the last two decades, California had dropped to one of the two worst-performing states relative to our diversity — putting us in the company of much less racially diverse states like Nebraska and Vermont."

Amazing and incredible news! It's time to make the UCs representative of the state.

I support affirmative action but be careful what you wish for! The last thing this country needs is even more uneducated whites.

Wtf does that last line even mean?
Haven't all admissions rates been declining so of course Asian admission rate would go down too. What was the change in the white admission rate? I mean the current admission rate overall is around 16%.

Sure but you could also look at first year enrollment and see that it's obvious that Asian Americans weren't harmed or benefited by 209. Whites benefited and Latinos and AAs suffered.

I don't have all the numbers on hand right now, but 209 being repealed would be a good thing.

You know, if Drumpf were smart he would realize this is the perfect wedge issue for him. But he seems to genuinely prefer trolling Antifa on Twitter as an electoral strategy.

I have to agree with lfromnj here. And FYI the links given in the source don't work.

This isn't necessarily bad for Asian Americans so long as data disaggregation is used to help even the playing field for lower-income and underrepresented Asian subgroups. A working class Chinese American from Oakland or a Hmong American from the Central Valley shouldn't be treated as equivalent to an out-of-state Indian American whose parents work at Microsoft.

The funny thing is Asian in California support affirmative action on balance.

Quote
A 2014 Field Poll of Californians found support from 69% of Asians surveyed, compared to 81.4% of Latinos and 83.1% of African Americans.

It is White voters who have shown the least support for affirmative action — only 57.3% supported it in the Field Poll — and who may prove to be the bigger hurdle for ACA 5 supporters at the ballot box.

And I think Asian Americans will trend D regardless of how affirmative action pans out.

UC Irvine is only 14.3% white, so I guess that would help whites out there.

I have some extremely out there ideas for college admissions (for US standards at least, they are perfectly normal here), but why is it so bad for college admissions to be race blind and gender blind?

Just admit people based on their merits. It is not even that hard to implement, just make it so students are just a number to the college admission stuff.

Because elite colleges will then lack representative black and Hispanic populations.

Look at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a STEM-focused magnet school in Fairfax County, VA that's one of the best public high schools in the nation.

Fairfax county as a whole is 61% white, 19% Asian, 16% Hispanic, and 10% black.
TJHSST is 70% Asian, 20% white, and just 2% black and 2% Hispanic.

The TJ admission system is purely meritocratic and the result is an unrepresentative, undiverse school.

I'd be interested to see the racial breakdown of <18 Californians. With whites overall making up 37% of the population, I'd bet that the white percentage among younger cohorts is even smaller.
