So in tonight's SMU Tulane game...

Early in the 4th quarter, SMU up by 3, Tulane with the ball, 3rd and 19.  They complete a pass and pick up some yardage, but not a first down (and not real close to one).  SMU accepts the penalty and sends them back.  This makes it 3rd and 29, rinse and repeat: Tulane completes a pass, not a first down, and gets ANOTHER holding penalty -- which SMU accepts again, setting up 3rd and 39.

On 3rd and 39, Tulane completes a long pass for the first down and shortly follows up with a TD to take the lead.  What was SMU thinking by not declining either of the holding penalties???  They tried to get cute and it came back to bite them.

Apparently Nick Saban will be coaching tonight.

As such, I'm switching my Georgia/Alabama pick back to Alabama. (good thing the game isn't until 7:00).

There are Fire Gus years and Make Gus a Saint years. This is a Fire Gus year. They might actually do it too.

Syracuse, who just lost to Liberty by 17, now has to play at Clemson. It might be in their best interest to dissolve their football program before having to go through it.

So, if Tommy Tuberville had to choose between going back to Auburn as head coach, and being a U.S Senator, which do you think he'd choose?

I believe it's impossible to determine whether we're in a Fire Gus year, except in hindsight. Most of 2017 was very much a Fire Gus year, as was the offseason after he lost to UCF in that Peach Bowl, but he had a few weeks in there after beating UGA and Alabama where Gus was able to sign that $49 million extension. Not impossible that we get something similar here (and I question their ability to pay his buyout with general COVID economy malaise).

Memphis-UCF in a wild one, currently 43-37 with about 9 minutes left.

Memphis, which trailed 35-14 in the third quarter, came back to win 50-49.  UCF had a chance to win at the end, but their kicker just missed a 40-yard FG.  There were 35 points scored in the fourth quarter (21 by Memphis, 14 by UCF).  One of the most exciting games I've seen in a long time!

Never doubt Alabamian football mania. Auburn will be able to raise the money to toss him if they want to. I'd normally agree with you, but the thing with the twist years is that Auburn usually faces Georgia and Alabama at the end of the year and can redeem themselves there. They've already lost to Georgia, so they'd be putting all their eggs in the "ruin Alabama's season" basket...

A US senator does not face potentially being fired every year based on the famously mercurial whims of Auburn fans. A US Senator doesn't have to spend a huge amount of their time trying to sweet talk high schoolers and their grandmas into picking their university. Recruiting is apparently grueling, unless you're one of the few coaches who is noted to being a natural at it like Nick Saban.

Man, I don't even know. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the shoe to drop and UNC to score 30 unanswered.

This Bama-Georgia game is shaping up to be an instant classic, but I have a flight I have to leave for before the crack of dawn tomorrow.  I just feel like, if I go to sleep, something insane is going to happen that I'll miss!

I seem to recall switching my pick in that game twice (I guess the switch back to Alabama never got recorded)

Honestly I doubt any game from this year will be remembered as a classic. This is going to be a year that will be forgotten because of the corona weirdness.

Well, with the Big Ten and Pac-12 (among others) due to begin play in the next few weeks, I thought I'd take my first shot at predicting the College Football playoff matchups and the other New Year's Six bowls.

Orange Bowl: Penn State vs Notre Dame

Peach Bowl: Iowa State vs Oregon

Fiesta Bowl: Texas A&M vs Minnesota

Cotton Bowl: SMU vs Miami (FL)

Rose Bowl (CFP): #3 Ohio State vs #2 Clemson

Sugar Bowl (CFP): #1 Alabama vs #4 Oklahoma State
