WEEK 8 RESULTS

For the first time this season, none of our games was postponed.  Dingo Joe and Donerail shared first place for the week at 18-7.  Full results:

18 Dingo Joe, Donerail
17 Dereich, Illiniwek
16 dfw, ExtremeRepublican, Jgibson
15 GeorgiaModerate
13 NY Express

There were six unanimous picks:

Wisconsin-Illinois
Ohio State-Nebraska
Kansas State-Kansas
Memphis-Temple
Notre Dame-Pitt
Penn State-Indiana (wrong)

And eight games with a single dissenter:

North Carolins-NC State
Coastal Carolina-Georgia Southern
UCF-Tulane
Virginia Tech-Wake Forest (incredibly prescient dissenter was right)
Kentucky-Missouri (dissenter was right)
LSU-South Carolina
Boise State-Utah State
Air Force-San Jose State (dissenter was right)

Donerail opened up a little bit of cushion in the overall standings, but there are still a bunch of people within striking distance.  Year to date results (154 games):

111 Donerail
108 dfw, DINGO Joe
107 ExtremeRepublican
105 Dereich, GeorgiaModerate
97 Illiniwek
95 NY Express
94 Jgibson

Georgia (Kentucky just hasn't been as good as it has been the past two seasons, and even then they failed to do much to Georgia)

Memphis (Assuming both the Bearcats and Liberty finish unbeaten, I'd like Liberty's chances at crashing the playoff a bit more. This is also my "upset special" pick, as I don't think Cincinnati wins against a pretty good Memphis team in a rivalry.)

Michigan (Michigan flattened Rutgers. Michigan State lost to Rutgers last week. That said, Jim Harbaugh's job status probably comes down to beating Ohio State at the end of the season)

Kansas State (Kansas State is just a win against either Oklahoma State or Iowa State from a locked in Big Twelve title game spot. And if they win both, and win a second time against Oklahoma State/Iowa State, they might have a Playoff spot waiting for them)

Coastal Carolina (Coastal Carolina needs to beat Liberty to have a serious chance to have a Group of Five playoff spot.)

Purdue (Illinois is good enough to keep this competitive, but they won't win this game)

UCF (This basically is a tossup game, but I think the Knights narrowly take this one)

North Texas (again, basically a tossup between two bad teams. I rather wish this one wasn't on the board. I'd rather be picking the Boston College/Clemson or Minnesota/Maryland games instead)

Wisconsin (This will not be close)

Indiana (Both Rutgers and Indiana got impressive wins last week. However, Indiana's win over Penn State is superior to Rutgers's win over Michigan State)

UAB

Baylor (Outside of beating Texas, TCU has looked awful. I have to wonder about Gary Patterson's job status, and if they continue on this pace it'll be two years in a row they'll finish without a bowl, which would not look good to a Power Five program.)

Auburn (Neither LSU nor Auburn have looked particularly good, and I wouldn't be shocked if both Ed Orgeron and Gus Malzahn lost their jobs at the end of the season)

Northwestern (Given the distractions surrounding the Hawkeyes program regarding Kirk Ferentz, I wouldn't be surprised if the Wildcats pulled off the upset, hence why I'm picking them)

Oklahoma State (This is a trap game for the Cowboys, given there's a big matchup with Kansas State and Bedlam with Oklahoma the next two weeks, but Oklahoma State has proven they are the clearly stronger team)

Ole Miss (Like Kansas in the Big Twelve, I wouldn't be surprised if Vanderbilt went winless this season)

Virginia Tech (Despite the victory over Florida State, I still have no confidence in the Cardinals to win this game)

Ohio State (I was sorely tempted to give this one to the Nittany Lions. However, I don't think the Nittany Lions are going to recover easily from their loss to Indiana, and that could be a disaster against the Buckeyes)

Texas A&M (Arkansas is doing better this year, but this game still won't be close)

Florida (The Gators haven't played since October 10, so they'll be rusty, but they should still win this one)

SMU (The Mustangs may have lost to Cincinnati, but they are still a better team than Navy)

Oklahoma (I get that Oklahoma just beat a ranked Texas team, and TCU...but I still don't think they are a Top 25 team at this point)

San Diego State

Nevada (I don't think this one will be close)

A couple of areas I disagree with you on, but I feel it would be better to show than tell.

Peach: #6 Notre Dame vs #10 USC

Cotton: #8 Kansas State vs #9 Texas A&M

Fiesta: #7 Oregon vs #12 Liberty

Orange: #11 Miami (FL) vs #5 Wisconsin

Rose (Semifinal) #2 Ohio State vs #3 Alabama

Sugar (Semifinal) #1 Clemson vs #4 Georgia

For Georgia or Notre Dame to make the playoff they would need to beat Alabama or Clemson. (I guess Ohio State could also just lose to Penn State?) Highly doubt that is happening this year, especially the Georgia half of that. BYU has better playoff odds, which probably ain't happening either. It will probably be Oklahoma State with an outside shot of the Pac-12 champ or Cincinnati.

Also, the BYU/Boise winner seems very likely to be in the Fiesta Bowl. I think Boise can blow out everyone on that slate and thus be ranked higher than K-State. Even an undefeated Liberty will not be. They'd be lucky to get top 20 despite arguably a more impressive schedule.

Love your Peach Bowl, NYE. High ratings!

Clemson and Notre Dame will presumably play each other in the ACC Championship Game. I doubt they'll take the loser to the playoff unless the Big 12 and Pac-12 just have no viable candidates.

But in that case, maybe. The SEC could get 2 in if Georgia beats Alabama in the SECCG rematch and they're both 10-1, but they definitely don't take a second SEC team if Alabama finishes 11-0. Well, I guess Texas A&M could finish 9-1 and be a playoff candidate without winning the West, but we all know that Texas A&M collapses every year.

Given Wisconsin is apparently without their top three quarterbacks, I'm switching my pick in the Wisconsin/Nebraska game from Wisconsin to Nebraska.

No Trevor Lawrence (COVID) seems to equal some problems for Clemson.

Boston College leads 14-7 early in the first quarter.
