242 years after 1619, in the very same place where the first Africans were sold in British North America,  escaped slaves were first treated as contraband of war by the US Army leading ultimately to the Emancipation Proclamation.   The 1619 Project doesn't mention this, even though it could have shown blacks as active participants in gaining their own freedom, either because no one involved looked into these events too closely or it complicated the narrative too much.
