Church was an excellent senator (24 years) and died far too early in 1984. 

He almost overcame the massive Republican tidal wave in Idaho in 1980 (Reagan won nearly 70% of the vote).  Church doubled Jimmy Carter's total and lost by only 4,000 votes in his Senate race.
