While I can see the logic to an extent for public libraries, it still makes sense to limit what kind of books (or other works) are allowed in schools, especially if the content might not be appropriate for the ages of children that attend them.

I concur. Obscene materials shouldn't be in public school libraries

I'll have to agree with the opposition to this bill, obscene material should not be in school libraries. The bill is too vague and vast.

Ultimately, that is a determination for teachers and librarians to make. Nobody is saying we should stock elementary schools with porn. Politicians have shown that they do not possess the skills to judge what is truly age-appropriate, as evidenced by the fact that the vast majority of books banned for "explicit descriptions" are not even arguably pornographic. (Nobody gets off reading the Holy Bible). If we can't trust school librarians to decide what should be in a library, why do we even have them?

All this bill does is ban governments from banning certain books. It doesn’t require that elementary schools stock 50 Shades of Grey.

I'm pleased to see that the the chamber has been able to do things while I had a long weekend. Thankyou to the deputy for putting this on the floor.

Nobody is saying we should stock elementary schools with porn... All this bill does is ban governments from banning certain books. It doesn't require that elementary schools stock 50 Shades of Grey.

No it doesn't require that elementary schools stock Porn or 50 Shades of Grey. But it also provides no guidelines for keeping materials age appropriate either.

This bill has its merits, but it does have it's flaws too. In its current state I won't be backing it.

This just goes back to the point of not trusting school principals and librarians to put in age appropriate books in libraries. If we can't trust them to do that how can we trust them to, well, teach?

I support the mindset that we should be keeping decisions as local as possible. From Section 2, Clause i, I would recommend striking “school board, or other authority.” I think giving school boards the power is fine and local enough. “Local authority is extremely vague and could apply to principles/teachers since they have authority. I would also strike clause ii in its entirety - following the spirit of the bill, these decisions should be made at the local level. A teacher shouldn’t be able to teach 50 Shades of Gray and then not face any disciplinary action because of a regional mandate.
