Colombus is easily worse, but Bolsonaro might be worse in time perspective. I think as slavery and stuff like that were common that people in the 15th century didn't develop a moral compass when they came in power. They had no idea what the meaning was of being a good leader. Being oppressive, tough and stuff like that were attributed to good leaders. Those people never had an example of how things should be. But it doesn't give him an excuse for what he has done, so I still voted Columbus in the poll.

I'm willing to concede that Columbus, although undoubtedly a nasty piece of work, was slandered by the Spanish monarchy and his successors, all of which resented the ridiculously generous terms of the official deal he signed when he set off in his expedition. (They were also spread by the rising Protestant powers like the English and Dutch, who generally liked to promote the idea that the Spanish were an insanely tyrannical people unlike the good empires they were building). Like, I can believe he treated natives like crap, and believed that turning them into serfs was for the best; it's also pretty indisputable that he was greedy and incompetent as an administrator; beyond that (especially the idea that his character was exceptionally wicked for the time) you get more dubious stuff.
