Mahler 6 (Bernstein, Wiener Philharmoniker 1989)

This has always been one of my favorite pieces, even when locked in teenage struggle against classical music. Almost all of my formal musical education, until around my junior year of high school, focused on the keyboard works of Bach, Mozart, and early Beethoven, with occasional dashings of composers like Clementi, Khachaturian, and Muczynski. Consequently, I became a devoted Mahlerite some time after my 13th birthday, both out of genuine passion and desperate rebellion. A decade on, and I can say confidently that Mahler, Wagner, and Reger constitute my musical "holy trinity," though I don't mind Beethoven.

I have always viewed my musical education as a kind of preparation for composing, rather than training in the skillset of playing music, despite the fact that all of my "serious" music teachers have discouraged me from this. I believe the artistic nadir currently enjoyed of many of my then-teacher's "star pupils" speaks to why. While I am now safely beyond the beleaguered student's ignorant, traumatized dismissal of Mozart and Bach, if I am forced to sit through either on a modern piano, I still wince a little.

Well, six just ended; I guess now I'm listening to Jerry Lee Lewis.
