I’d think Nixon would appeal to certain counties, but there were no Nixon counties whatsoever in Alabama, Mississipi, and Louisiana, and in Georgia only some Northern border counties and one other went for Nixon.

Deep south voters didn't want to vote Republican unless they had to. In 1964, they felt they had to. Not so much in 68, where they had 2 Democrat options. Even south Carolina would have gone to Wallace if Nixon didn't campaign in the south and if strom didn't support Nixon (for no real reason besides jumping to the Republican party last election)
