NY stated today that they won't be counting absentees until a week after the day of in person voting. If this or any other NY primary is not a blowout, there will be no clear winner for a while. The Georgia primary wasn't really hostile between candidates, so everyone was spared potential accusations. However this could lead to an ugly week of discourse and potential fraud.

I could see ugly discourse, but not the fraud part.

Potential fraud accusations* forgot that part and now edited the post.

Here's the problem with Engel: despite many of his colleagues vouching for him, he isn't known for the stuff he did in Congress. He's known for saying an incredibly stupid (possibly career-ending) thing on a hot mic at the worst possible time, & his colleagues are simply worried that his defeat may have a reverberating effect.

All of these endorsements won't count for sh*t, because the hot mic incident just gave backing to what people had been saying about him before: that he no longer fits his district or has any interest in actually showing up & representing them locally. If any congressperson reaches that stage where being a member of Congress is just a 9-5 & not something you're doing to actually make the lives of your constituents better, then it's time for them to go.

I sincerely hope Bowman wins.

Its a good thing for him that he isn't known for his Congressional record leading the foreign affairs committee. It includes voting for the Iraq war, and being against the Iran peace treaty.

I live in his district, and I've been flooded with phone messages for him. I have to say that those messages dont help his case any. Yesterday, I had one with a strong Hillary endorsement, one with Gillibrand's voice, and one with a strange accent that mispronounced his name and mangled mine and said to vote for him since he was pro-Israel. At least the messages reminded me to send my ballot in for Bowman.

Does seem Engel is at least going down fighting. I don’t quite get why though, he doesn’t seem to have much interest in actually being in Congress - I’d have thought being an ambassador to somewhere or something in the state department would be more his speed.

Oh, he has plenty of interest being in congress and protect the interests of Israel and his Zionist allies.

Debt shaming? You mean criticizing people for their own bad choices and asking them to take personal responsibility? How is that a bad thing?

Seriously? Can you cut out the anti-semitism for, like, one day?

Debt shaming??? You mean criticizing people for their own bad choices and asking them to take personal responsibility? How is that a bad thing?

You mean like Trump did when his daddy bailed him out when he bankrupted a casino?

First off, whataboutism, again, lol. Secondly, yeah, I really don't like Trump. I consider him an unprincipled moron, but I'll vote for him anyway because he's the most conservative.

Thus forfeiting any right to criticize someone else for his personal choices.

Not sure that’s a fair characterisation of his tenure, he’s active on lots of foreign policy issues, and kinda has anti-Semitic overtones to imply cos he’s Jewish and pro-Israel that’s his only interest. I don’t particularly like the guy but there’s far more legitimate reasons to criticise him than the fact that he - like most members of Congress and probably most American voters - is Pro-Israel.

Most members of Congress are bribed into being super pro israel yes. I doubt Engel needed to be bribed though.

Let’s stay focused on Engel’s record and positions. If this thread gets into larger questions about support for Israel in Congress, that’s a different discussion for a different forum.

But herein lies the problem for Engel: in his 30 years as congressman he has done nothing to make him stand out, besides being fanatically pro-Israel (or more correctly, pro-Likud).

Well, thats because Likud has more or less been the governing party. Democratic positions and Jewish voters align more with whomever is challenging Bibi at the time, be it labour, gantz, or kadima. However, you can't really officially place your chips in one basket beforehand, without endangering support with the other in case it wins. Now, Bibi has been out of power a few times during Engels time in office, most notably during the Rabin period. I'm no investigator, but I would assume Engel went along with whomever is in charge.

Reminder that around 80% of Americans are in debt, with the average at around $38K in 2018.

How exactly would the son/daughter of a billionaire face the same criticism if they run for office?

Tad bit curious how you have $2,000 in debt that you aren't aware of. I'd assume whoever he owes the money to would have tried to contact him before?

https://nypost.com/2020/06/20/jamaal-bowman-sued-ex-fiancee-for-engagement-ring-court-records/

Quote
The diamonds weren’t forever.

Though Jamaal Bowman’s campaign to unseat 16-term Congressman Eliot Engel in Tuesday’s primary has been gaining steam, he’s been less lucky with love, court records show.

In April 2003, when his relationship with fiancee Toyami Als went south, Bowman initiated legal proceedings in Brooklyn Civil Court to compel her to return a $5,800 engagement ring.

The case went nowhere and was resolved out of court.

Said ex-fiancee actually donated $500 to Bowman's campaign...and got to keep the engagement ring.

I'm a tad bit curious why this is even a remotely relevant concern when Engel voted for an illegal war that put our country a trillion dollars deeper into debt.

I am solidly upper middle class and have loan sharks come after me because of accounting errors in hospital bills. This kind of stuff happens all the times, especially when you're working class.

This attack is persuasive to the 99% in the district and shows how out of touch/desperate engel is right now
