While Trump is on this whole authoritarian streak he should just go ahead and execute whoever suggested this dumb gesture.

Meh. Wouldn't be worth Pence becoming president.

Seeing as a fair number of Trump's base see Christianity as a political identity and not anything spiritual, I doubt this will cost him a single vote.

No. What country have you guys been living in for the past 5 years? No single event like this will have any significant impact on the election.

I don't know.  I think presidents need to be more open about their faith and actually attend church, but Trump did not go to the church to pray or make a statement calling for unity (as we're all God's children).  That was not the time for a political stunt, and I really don't like the Bible being used as one.

I can't vote for Biden because of abortion, but I'm starting to question whether I can vote for Trump again (that's not to say that I've come to the conclusion that I can't, because I still don't know).  I suspect that similar thoughts are going through the minds of a lot of Christians right now, especially those who only mildly supported Trump to begin with.

I totally get why you can't vote for Biden, but maybe you should vote third party or leave the Presidential slot blank or write someone in if you really feel disgusted with Trump. Trump's not entitled to your vote and TN's not going to decide the election.

I keep saying this. The election result is already determined. We just won't know what it is until after Election Day. We are so polarized that events like this no longer have any effect.

The best example of this is Trump's approval rating. Since mid-2018, the only things that have been able to move it from its "default" of 43% have been the 2018-2019 government shutdown, which led to a drop that immediately reversed as soon as the shutdown ended, and the beginning of the pandemic, which led to a very brief "rally around the flag" effect that quickly dissipated.

Dukakis in a tank was a goofy picture.

Trump holding a Bible is a desecration (and I say this as an atheist). But then Trump has desecrated just about everything.

Just so you know, you’ve been used as a pawn by racist Republicans for years. Initially, Southern evangelical leaders did not care about abortion at all and even affirmed it repeatedly following Roe v. Wade. (Ironically, they saw it as a Catholic issue, and Biden is a Catholic.) It was only when they realized they needed an issue to exploit and rally their base around (now that open racism and segregation didn’t work) that they suddenly changed their tune. Now it’s the worst sin ever (even though it’s never clearly mentioned in the Bible) and mass infanticide!

https://www.npr.org/2019/06/20/734303135/throughline-traces-evangelicals-history-on-the-abortion-issue

If you really are a single-issue abortion voter, and are evangelical (I know you’re Southern), you’ve been played. There’s no getting around it. It’s just such a dumb thing anyway. Trump hasn’t outlawed abortion and he’s not going to. We know he approved of it in the past and probably has paid for a few; he’s using you too. Roberts probably isn’t gonna allow Roe v. Wade to be overturned. Biden, who supported the Hyde Amendment until recently and has always been a moderate on the issue, is not some radical pro-abortion activist who is gonna make abortions in this country skyrocket. Nothing will change dramatically regarding abortion if he wins. It’s a dead issue that is cynically used by Republicans as a political ploy to manipulate people.

Please understand what the president actually does and does not do. Voting solely based on his (public) views on abortion is ridiculous. There is an insane amount at stake here, including whether our democratic rule of law stands. You seemingly recognize this man is a charlatan who is no Christian or even a conservative. Why would you ever consciously vote for that? You may not agree with Biden on everything, but you can’t seriously tell me you don’t think he’s a more compassionate leader who’s more sincere about his faith (and everything) and who will respect this nation’s citizens and laws more. And that’s what really matters for a president.

He is not really a single issue abortion voter in the way people think and is way to the right of elected republicans on economic issues too.

What he means by that is he will vote for Bel Edwards types over Charlie Baker types

I voted "Yes" with a few caveats.

In terms of the effect on the election, Yes. Votes are much more savvy and informed than in 1988, and will associate the photo op with tear-gassing protesters, removing the priest, and Trump helping himself to a Bible. Those who aren't bothered by this almost certainly would have voted Trump anyway. It hurts him slightly among moderately religious swing voters, which in today's climate could make the difference.

The nature of the act, of course, is nothing like Dukakis' tank ride.

What he did was so egregiously insulting, but it won't shift votes. The non religious are more likely to be disgusted by this than his faux Christian base.

If you truly believed abortion was murder, then it would make a logical/moral sense to vote for Moore and Trump. I would vote for a democratic Trump/Moore over a Republican Kasich

You live in Tennessee. You can decline to vote for Trump in protest without it being an electoral issue.

Can someone please explain to me what's so bad about this? Why would this little event turn the delusional Christian right away from Trump? Aren't they used to being pandered to by now?

I would say "no," because Dukakis never had cult-like support.

Had Dukakis had 80% of the military establishment rabidly supporting him when he did his tank ad, it might be an apt comparison.

Trump's photo-op poses a question for American Christians:
Do they want a president who brandishes the Bible like a weapon, or one who actually reads it?

This obviously isn't going to alienate any of the Evangelicals and radicalized Catholics who are holding Trump's balls on church-and-state issues and know it, but there are other elements of a Republican minimal winning coalition that have much less appetite for performative political Christianity, like the affluent Smiley moderates Smiley the "LAW AND ORDER" authoritarianism is allegedly supposed to win back.

Donald Trump is the president who paid hush money to the porn star he committed adultery with.

While I'm not sure what evangelicals actually believe in, I'm pretty certain that they're not really outraged by "sinful" or "sacrilegious" behaviour as long as it is committed by someone whose voter registration says "Republican".

Actual church attendance by Evangelicals has been going down for a while now. In much of the country it's as much a social--and, yes, political--identity as a religious one at this point.

Talk to college-educated Evangelicals, and Evangelicals without a college education, and you will hear two very different stories about Trump.

They want one who brandishes the Bible like a weapon, obviously. Their entire religious belief  consists of just that, so why wouldn't they expect the same of their leader?

I could see Trump trying to get into a tank and run protestors over before the election.

Smiley
I bet trump supporters would see this as "very manly and macho" though. Even if the person is squashed like a pancake with intestines and brains splattered everywhere.
Look at their bizarre viewpoint of "Biden wearing a mask, and looking weak."
