Paul Marquart?

Are they other Minnesota Democrats that win in those areas? Is it the Iron Range?

If he wins in 2020 and redistricting leads to him contesting a seat with a much less Republican PVI, he could have a Democratic heir. Otherwise, the only way he'll have a Democratic heir is if he's defeated, as they'll inherit that legacy.

If he wins again in 2020, and retires in 2022, can a Democrat hold on to that seat?

If it has a PVI of, say, R+5, there might be a chance even in a Democratic midterm. MN is going to lose a district and all 3 of its rural CDs are significantly underpopulated, so there are likely to be big changes - it's just not clear how those will work out.

A DFL trifecta likely means two rural R pack districts and then everything else. So Peterson's would be a pack district.

If the Republicans somehow retain the State Senate then you'll get a court map and that might result in a large northern Minnesota district that connects to the Iron Range, but that would be more of a new MN-8 than 7. Most of the population in Peterson's district live in the southern end, which is not only heavily Republican it always has been. That would likely get put in with the 6th. So put simply there's almost no chance the district survives in any recognizable form after redistricting.

There will be none, as he is probably losing and even if he doesn't, it is a foregone conclusion that this seat will be taken apart in redistricting.

I suspect he'd want to retire regardless of his seat's partisan lean after this term (and he has indicated this might be his last run), but if he runs again in a much more Democratic-leaning redrawn district and wins, he could have a Democratic successor. They just won't be a successor to MN-07's Democratic base as we currently know it.

a new MN-07 with Moorhead/Iron Range would be about Trump +15 and Peterson could probably beat Stauber in it. Would he? He's pretty old so I don't know if he'd want to.

Peterson would have been in the gop had the republicans not try to pressure him in to retirement or run though nasty campaign ads
