Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but other BLM protests did not have the level of diverse support from the labour movement compared to what’s going on right now. It finally seems like the vast majority of marginalized Americans are coming together in the realization that their struggles are linked in similarities of type and the perpetrators their trying to fight against. That I think explains why BLM has been gaining immensely in popularity over the past few years of its existence, the mass of individuals are fed up.

In many ways, these protests were disorganized and had very little infrastructure to maintain them, yet under these conditions politicians are willing to hash out reform to ease the minds of people. Imagine what a more centralized front could do now that the experiences and know how are now learned so that preparations can be made next time.

To get an idea of how the current protests against Police Brutality and institutionalized racism within the United States are expanding to perhaps many communities where one might expect them to perhaps be less receptive to the BLM message...

Quote
Young Hasidic Jews protest in support of black neighbors, challenging history of racial tensions....On a recent Sunday, about 200 young Hasidic women in long skirts and wigs and men with wide-brimmed black hats and free-flowing beards parked their baby strollers along the tree-lined boulevards of Crown Heights in Brooklyn.

They picked up their bullhorns and raised their homemade posters, some in Hebrew and Yiddish.

“The opposite of love is not hate. It’s indifference,” one sign read, quoting Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace laureate Elie Wiesel. The young families chanted “Black lives matter!” and “Jews for justice!” as they marched through the diverse neighborhood, once home to riots that broke out over tensions between black and Hasidic residents.

But on this day, there was largely gratitude and curiosity. Some African American and Caribbean neighbors did double takes as they passed the improbable scene of solidarity. Others touched their hearts and called out “Thank you!”...The June 7 demonstration was organized by Zik and other young Hasidic Jews who wanted to build allyship with their black neighbors. It was a trailblazing move for a new generation in the Hasidic community, young people who publicly proclaimed that Jewish law requires them to stand up against injustice and racism, even without the backing of their community’s leaders.

As they organized the demonstration, they welcomed openly gay former members who had been shunned by the community, and asked rabbis to speak about how standing up to injustice and racism is at the heart of Hasidic Jewish values. But their plans proved divisive, unleashing tense and emotional discussions within the community.

Not here to correct.... Although I am not an expert on BLM as a New Social Movement (NSM), it appears that your assessment that "BLM" originated from grassroots communities throughout the US in direct response to the most egregious examples of police killings of African-Americans was inherently a decentralized movement initially, with loose connections of activists gradually building and expanding connections.

I will shelve the Labor Movement aspect for a moment....

I tend to view the current Social Movement as an Historical Extension of Social Movements that go back to the 1960s, and even possibly earlier to the 1930s...

Scrambling around to find this book which is buried somewhere in our book cases with over 3,000 Books....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_Process_and_the_Development_of_the_Black_Insurgency,_1930%E2%80%931970

https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/P/bo5939918.html

1.) Regardless of the book, it is transparently clear that the current BLM Social Movement is representative of a social movement which experienced waves of political "abeyance"

2.) If we look at the history of the Black Liberation Movement, the shift of the Civil Rights Movement from Southern States to Northern States, under the leadership of MLK and others, dramatically changed the terrain.

3.) Indirectly, the movement for racial equality and an end to various forms of institutionalized racism and local White Supremacist structures, created a massive "White Lash" within Northern States, where George Wallace was somehow a hero to many in Northern States in '68 and '72....

4.) As the '70s roll on, many people thought that Jimmy Carter being President, Black Officers on the force were somehow gonna change things for the better...

5.) Naturally that didn't resolve fundamental issues, and Reagan rolls in, where a war against the poor, war against the Black, and the "war on drugs" becomes a gig...

6.) The Union Movement and support for Civil Rights Movement Activities?

MLK got murdered in Menphis to support striking waste disposal workers...

Various Unions have been extensively involved in various Civil Rights struggles over the Years...

Currently the Labor Movement in the US is a pale rump shadow of its former self...

Vast majority of Union Workers are now public sector workers that are effectively banned from various forms of collective bargaining, let alone mass union power to shut stuff down....

Sometimes the best the transit sector workers can do is say, "we will not allow our City Buses to be uses to transport protesters to jail"....

Meanwhile we have police unions threatening to do "wildcat strikes" in various Cities across the US...

It’s outrageous, the commune must be crushed now. They are lawless and explicitly anti-American. It’s time to siege them in.
And these protestors are complicit in spreading Covid-19 and killing the American people.

You realize you just described the Trump White House, right?

ALLAM: Salvador Sahagun is the manager of a Mexican restaurant on the edge of the CHAZ. He says the business from protesters has been a godsend. Sahagun voted for Trump in 2016 and might do so again in November. Still, he says, the president is way off-base when it comes to what's happening here.

Hey look its your opposite.

ILWU Members go on strike at (29) ports along the West Coast on Juneteenth

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/4ay3xm/one-of-americas-most-powerful-unions-will-shut-down-29-ports-on-juneteenth

https://www.ilwu.org/west-coast-dockworkers-will-observe-juneteenth-work-will-stop-for-eight-hours-on-historic-day/

Quote
“Juneteenth has long been recognized by the African-American community, but for many others it was unknown until now – as our nation, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, refocuses on ways to address ongoing, systemic racial injustice,” said ILWU International President Willie Adams. “Thousands of dockworkers will stop work for the first shift on June 19, 2020, to show their commitment to the cause of racial equality and social justice.”....“Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States,” said ILWU International SecretaryTreasurer Ed Ferris, who attended Mr. Floyd’s memorial on June 8. “It’s appropriate and necessary for us to acknowledge this history in the search for ways to end racism and restore justice for all Americans.”

ILWU International Executive Board member Melvin Mackay also attended Mr. Floyd’s memorial. “It’s been 157 years since the Emancipation Proclamation,” said Mackay, “but our nation remains plagued by systemic racism, as the murder of Mr. Floyd so tragically demonstrated. We can and must do better.”

I guess the ILWU was looking for a way to go on strike during a recession that wouldn't shoot themselves in the foot. Of all the unions out there, they've historically been one of the more hidebound and Ludditical ones, which considering how containerization of shipping impacted them, isn't that surprising.

Two people got shot inside CHOP. The medical clinics of the area transported them to the hospital but one died.

Greta Thunberg has also commented on BLM as of late.

The Homicide victim was a 19 Year old Black Man...

So without knowing further details, might be potentially be a random act of street violence in an "edgy neighborhood after hours", or potentially even more likely (in my mind) some type of hate crime from the various militia types who have been patrolling the perimeters on a daily basis....

Rubber bullets and pepper spray deployed a few hours ago in Compton, California:

https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/black-lives-matter-protests-06-21-2020/index.html

Quote
Earlier tonight, police deployed rubber bullets and pepper spray on a group of protesters in Compton, southern Los Angeles County.

At least six people were detained.

Almost 3,000 people marched peacefully through the city today, with tensions rising toward the evening as demonstrators went face to face with police near the Compton courthouse and the sheriff's substation.

"The demonstrators and those deputies ... were face to face and next thing you know, rubber bullets started flying," said CNN reporter Paul Vercammen from the scene. "Some sort of pepper spray-like substance was shot in the air, we heard flash bangs."
He added that the demonstrators were marching in protest after the death of 18-year-old security guard Andres Guardado, who was shot by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy while working at an auto body shop.

Not everything is a hate crime , most murders are not that and it was probably one of the leftist anarkiddies acting all dangerous.

I enjoy how they were telling him as they were beating him up to delete the video, did not succeed, and their faces ended up being captured on that same video. It didn't even look like the protesters were doing anything sketchy they'd want to hide from being recorded. But seriously, if you go to a public protest people can take pictures of you. I'm not sure on what planet people think you can beat up an old man taking video of a protest because.....you don't like that for some reason? I hope they catch those people.

Here’s demographic information on the recent protests
Pretty obvious but still, it’s interesting how the recent protests are very much a diverse effort against police brutality. Gotta love the solidarity as of late.

Portland, Oregon experienced a bit more unrest last Night than has been seen in recent days, with protesters marching the Portland Police Department's North Precinct at Night, with CS Gas being deployed for the first time in recent weeks.

It is possible that this may possibly have been in violation of the Judge's order banning the use of such weapons unless "a life is at risk".

Most likely the PPD will claim that a Dumpster Fire on the edge of the North Precinct Bldg created a "risk to life", with the Fire Department being deployed to put out the dumpster fire....

Still would not be surprised to see this being scrutinized more closely....

Surprised nobody has mentioned the shooting in Louisville on here yet.

article

Appears a protester fired a gun into a crowd of fellow protesters killing 1 and several smart protesters who were armed fired back. This should be bigger news than its being treated. I can't help but feel that if the shooter was wearing a KKK hood rather than being a fellow protester this would be the only news story in the country.

Portland Oregon Police apparently once again deployed "non-lethal" hardware when protesters came close to the Portland Police Union headquarters on North Lombard Street, a day before a vote on a police union contract...

The gathering outside the police union came on the eve of a planned Portland City Council vote Wednesday to extend the expiring contract with the union.

Meanwhile in Portland, Oregon we are now moving into the 37th day in a row of significant protests...

https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2020/07/portland-protests-to-resume-friday-marking-citys-37th-consecutive-day-of-demonstrations.html

Last Night got a bit rough, most likely because of Police over-reactions from a protest in North Portland / NE Portland the Night before, while protesters were focusing on a Police Union Contract vote outside of their Union Hall, which was met with excessive repression, including the use of CS Gas, which was effectively temporarily banned by a Judge for use against protesters with a few limited exceptions....

‘Strike for Black Lives’ to highlight racism
Quote
national coalition of labor unions, along with racial and social justice organizations, will stage a mass walkout from work this month, as part of an ongoing reckoning on systemic racism and police brutality in the U.S.

Dubbed the “Strike for Black Lives,” tens of thousands of fast food, ride-share, nursing home and airport workers in more than 25 cities are expected to walk off the job July 20 for a full day strike. Those who can’t strike for a full day will walk out for about eight minutes — the amount of time prosecutors say a white Minneapolis police officer held his knee on George Floyd’s neck — in remembrance of Black men and women who died recently at the hands of police.

The national strike will also include worker-led marches through participating cities, organizers said Wednesday.

According to details shared exclusively with The Associated Press, organizers are demanding sweeping action by corporations and government to confront systemic racism in an economy that chokes off economic mobility and career opportunities for many Black and Hispanic workers, who make up a disproportionate number of those earning less than a living wage. They also stress the need for guaranteed sick pay, affordable health care coverage and better safety measures for low-wage workers who never had the option of working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
