If Trump has some kind of big convention this is going to backfire spectacularly for him.  Does he really think his MAGA cult rallies screaming and not social distancing without masks on full display for America (most of whom will probably be home and bored and watching) is going to make him and his party look good to the average person?   It's not going to help him with a single non-MAGA cult member.

Trump used to complain that the media didn't cover his rallies enough.  He's lucky they didn't.  If they showed thousands of his creepy supporters acting the way they typically do it would have backfired then too.  I don't think a lot of people in the burbs realized how bad they are.

Completely rules how thousands of republican devotees will happily gather and catch a deadly virus to honor their dear leader.

And one of the most ironic / tragic things is that we all know, given Trump's enormous penchant for being both a germaphobe and a hypocrite, that he will keep himself safely distance from convention-goers and staff even as he Rambles on about how the Democrats tried to shut down their convention for no good reason.

Lmao like Cooper cares whether Trump hosts his personal cult party in his state.

What a moron, you can’t just reschedule these things on the fly.

If Trump can't give his speech to a giant arena packed full of screaming deplorables, he is going to be pissed.

Trump wants to bail out the cruise industry, right?  They should hold it on one of the giant cruise ships. Smiley

Like the Florida GOP, the Georgia GOP also sounds interested in being a backup option:

https://www.ajc.com/blog/politics/the-jolt-the-case-against-putting-ahmaud-arbery-name-hate-crimes-bill/lPTCbo1RRkgNbOIyJiAFOL/

Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump, in a Twitter message, threatened to move the August gathering out of Charlotte unless the state’s Democratic governor guarantees full attendance. Before the pandemic, the RNC had said it expected 50,000 to attend.

Gov. Brian Kemp said Tuesday, via the president’s preferred messaging service, that he would be delighted to see it happen. And Georgia GOP chair David Shafer said that he has spoken to both the governor and the Republican National Committee about the possibility.

City councils would have to want and approve the moved convention. So you can cross out many cities in Florida, Georgia and Texas just based on that.

Nah.  There're these things called State Troopers that Kemp and DeSantis can easily dispatch to overrun APD or whatever.  Security for national conventions is never a strictly local undertaking, anyway.  State governments are unitary, governors can overrule mayors or city councils by simple order and they hold all the keys to enforcement (which should be entirely evident, given that it's Governor Cooper who's threatening to cancel the RNC and not the mayor of Charlotte).

There is zero way you can do a modern convention without the cooperation from the local government.

I don't think the Governor of Georgia can just be like, eh I don't care what the local government says I am issuing you the necessary permits and if the local policy won't do anything I will send in the state troopers who are supposed to be protecting the people of the entire state not just the people who I decided to make have the convention here under the protest of the local government.

The RNC should move it's convention to West Virginia or Oklahoma.
RNC in Oklahoma City or Tulsa?

Trump wants to sicken and kill as many of his fellow Republicans as possible:

Trump is reportedly insisting the Republican National Convention be held without face masks or social distancing measures

I really don't see this convention happening if Trump sticks to his guns here.  At least not in North Carolina.

This couldn't get scarier if Trump literally set up a giant bowl of Kool-Aid on the dais and forced everyone to drink it.

I strongly suspect he wants to move it to Mar-a-Lago to maximise the grift, but objecting to any mask-wearing (even non-mandatory mask wearing) is counterproductive. His campaign would have been better off selling MAGA/KAG masks.

Mar A Lago isn't big enough to accomodate 10s of thousands watching his speech like he wants.

My guess is Jacksonville, FL would be a good choice, as a large enough city that's also at least somewhat Trumpy.

If all goes wrong I honestly think they will just put it in the Stegeman Coliseum in Georgia.

ROFLMAO!  Stegeman Coliseum is the on-campus arena at the University of Georgia, which is located in Athens - one of the most Democratic cities in the state.  It would be hilarious, but there's no way it would happen.

If the convention were to move to Georgia, it would almost have to be held in Atlanta.  But I strongly doubt the mayor would allow it.

Some all-white county with a race track in Appalachia would seem the best option at this point.

Matt Lewis floats the idea of the party holding a very scaled back event for most of the week to conduct essential party business, but then capping it off with a big outdoor rally type event for Trump's acceptance speech ("probably in the deep South, where local government will allow it"):

https://www.thedailybeast.com/donald-trump-will-risk-thousands-getting-sick-so-he-can-give-a-big-convention-speech?ref=author

But Trump obviously has demonstrated the logistical ability to organize very large rallies very quickly. One could imagine a sort of hybrid scenario where the business meeting part of a convention is truncated, and Trump formally accepts the nomination at some other large outdoor location (probably in the deep South, where local government will allow it), where he delivers the televised speech to a packed crowd.

Another possibility would be Trump’s Doral golf resort in Florida. Though Trump has denied interest in using the location, why should we take him at his word? Already, the Florida GOP has said they would welcome it. Back in October, Trump planned to hold the June 2020 G7 meeting there—before bowing to pressure. It’s presumably less messy to hold a party event there. If he and his sleazy family can make a buck off it, why wouldn’t they try?
