Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who was the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee and 2004 and 2008 presidential candidate stays active in politics enough to capture the populist mood of country post 2008.

Edwards wins the Democratic presidential nomination, he faces off against President Trump.

Who wins?

Imagine if his affair was kept secret for a few more years. Not to be macabre or disrespectful to the late Mrs. Edwards (who wasn't a saint herself, but what John did to her was beyond the pale), but she passed away not too long after the scandal played out.

If he could keep his relationship with Hunter under wraps, then he'd surely have been Obama's AG in 2009. I bet he'd probably stay through the first term and then "retire" ahead of 2020. Let's say he runs, places second to Hillary.

If he was still relevant somehow by 2020, he could easily run but I doubt he'd get the nomination. Same with Al Gore and John Kerry - they are all figures of the past, defined by 2000 - 2010 more so than the world of Trump.

I think Edwards would have beaten Trump---he is no Kerry, Gore, Hillary or Biden----Washington creatures who can be defined.

Edwards would have played well in the South

It depends if Edwards has held some other office before 2020. Perhaps he drops his presidential bid earlier in 2008 to run against Elizabeth Dole or maybe he runs for governor of North Carolina in 2008 or 2016?

Assuming Edwards keeps his affair a complete secret (which wouldn't have been that difficult, given everyone but the National Enquirer was ignoring it), it wouldn't have taken much opposition research for Trump to find out about Rielle Hunter. Of course, it's not like Trump would've been the best attack dog on the subject, with his multiple exes and divorces.

Former Senator John Edwards/Senator Kamala Harris 269 EV 50%
POTUS Donald Trump/VPOTUS Mike Pence 269 EV 49%

The House chooses Trump, the Senate chooses Pence.

Edwards would run for Governor in 2016, and win instead of Roy Cooper. As his running mate, he decides to go with someone from the Southwest to balance the ticket, and he selects Julian Castro, and they go on to a pretty convincing victory. I would say 375-163 This by the way is if the affair never occurred. How? Maybe something else happens like Kerry picks Gephardt for VP, he runs for Senate in 04, although if that happens he probably doesn't win in 2010. By the way, does anyone know how to insert a map for this?
