I think Gov. Phil Murphy wins a second term in 2021. Who's the favorite for 2025?

Sheila Oliver could run, but she'd be 73. Maybe Josh Gottheimer or Mikie Sherrill if they're still in Congress.

Gottheimer is probably too conservative to win the primary.

For the Republicans, probably Jon Runyan

He's not coming back to politics, and apparently hated being in Congress even though he was actually pretty good at it.

I've also realized predicting future gubernatorial candidates in Jersey is actually pretty hard since they don't have elected row officers. Maybe Republicans find a Murphy/Corzine type self-funding multimillionaire. The state certainly doesn't lack for them.

Wow. So you don't see Runyan running for anything again? Maybe Brian Bergen, probably.

Yes, NJ governor is the only elected statewide office. Not even AG, Treasurer, etc.

NJ governor is like president/Senate. The Legislature votes on governor's nominees.

Have any of the recent NJ governors been obvious candidates 5 years out?

Not really.

Murphy in 2012: Ambassador to Germany, former DNC finance chair
Christie in 2004: US Attorney, former Morris Freeholder
Corzine in 2000: US Senate candidate, former Goldman CEO
McGreevey in 1996: State Senator and Mayor
Whitman in 1988: Head of Public Utilities Board, former Somerset Freeholder

5 years out, I can't imagine any of them were particularly well-known statewide.

Yeah, Fulop was the frontrunner for 2017 until Murphy outmaneuvered him.

Hot take, but I wouldn’t be surprised by Booker tbh. He’s always felt like more of an executive than a legislator to me and the timing’s never really worked out to make a run for governor with Sandy and the presidential run.
