Closing American military bases in Europe makes it way more difficult to conduct operations in the middle east, iirc Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany was one of the United States key points in the Gulf Wars and in the Syrian, Libyan, and Iraqi civil wars.
^^ A few non-leftwing editorials I've seen in my country on the matter did in fact argue in the direction of "this hurts U.S. strategic interests more than it does the German one". The left-wing response can be summed up with the picture above, I guess.
