If it's a bipartisan bill, I assume it's a bunch of harmless tweaks?

That or marginal incumbent protection.

Which incumbent? The only incumbent in need of protection is Schrier, and there's no reason for the GOP to accept protecting her.

Done. A handful of precincts moved on the congressional map.

Not quite yet...KS has yet to approve a map (and it's probably going to take a while now that Kelly vetoed Ad Astra).

You only gave people two options, one of which was obviously wrong. That's like running the 2016 election where the only two candidates are Trump and McMullin, whereas HRC can only appear as a write-in--you're not going to get an accurate encapsulation of people's preferences.

I gave people two map options, but there was also an 'Other' option on the poll, which was just as easy to click as the options for 'Map 1' and 'Map 2.' Over 80% voted that either Map 1 or Map 2 is a good way of dividing the US east/west and both maps identified KS as western. Only a few people (who probably voted 'Other', though even some people who think KS is western might've voted for 'Other') voted 'Other' and/or gave maps that said KS isn't western.

Anyway, this may well be much ado over nothing because I think the KS Legislature is in the process of an override vote in the HoR and it looks like they might make it. Going to that thread now to see what's going on there.

The west proper - in today’s America, at least - starts at the foothills of the Rockies.

I mean, Kansas is obviously "Western" if you consider a simple East/West binary. But if you use the standard East/South/Midwest/West divide (the only sensical way to divide the US into macroregions) then I'd argue it's more Midwestern than Western.

The Redistricting Commission is apparently unwilling to mount a legal defense of their own maps, plus the chair resigned. Oof.

Is this better or worse than the map that WA got in 2022?

So much better. I personally wish they rotated 4 and 5 as well, so 4 could get a higher Hispanic population.

The WA-08 equivalent looks like it might be a little more D than in OTL. Pity Seattle can't have a CD all to itself.

WA-08 seems to be about two or three more points D than OTL. As for Seattle forming a CD to itself, imo it would probably be able to achieve that either in 2030 if the city continues to grow faster in population than the state average, or in 2030 or 2040 if the state gains an additional district.

Part of the issue with WA is it's relatively easy to get 7 "safe/likely" D seats on a neutrally drawn config, but it's also pretty easy to give Rs 5 seats they can realistically win.

WA is also generally annoying because there's no ideal place to cross the cascades, but for now 8 is the best option. The extreme urban-rural divide can also lead to troubles.

What I like about your map is it makes a true Seattle based CD without weakening 9 as a minority opportunity seat.

Also I was playing around on DRA and rotating 4 and 5 so they're east-west doesn't work out as nicely as I thought, so I think for now keeping them as is (as in your map), is the better option.
