Yes, if Streeting didn't say such daft things he might be in the SC by now.

Such a curate's egg of a politician right now.

I think I've said this before, but my impression of Streeting is that he performs well enough when he's taking aim at Tories, but he's addicted to pointlessly trying to own factional opponents. Personally I blame his background.

There’s an interesting parallel with Zarah Sultana- as much as both would hate to admit it.

Starmer on Marr (say that fast) listening to former Labour darling, the actor Brian Cox explain why he shifted from Labour to SNP then completely sh-tting the bed was an uncomfortable watch.

He also ruled out Labour returning to power by refusing to work with the SNP. So good luck with that.

Hmmm, would actually want to see the comments for myself before passing judgement.

Forever war seems to have had a quiet few weeks.

I did think it was strange for John Mac to say Keir should quit if the post conference polls didn’t improve- especially as the bump is largely down to other factors.

There's a little flare up in Coventry, it would appear.

Oh yes- it was strange that it was reported as news as it’s been known since 2019 that some elements of the local party were annoyed about the imposition.

I doubt it will lead to anything though- even if a challenge is triggered, which is very hard under the new rules. I don’t know if there’s anything local in the CLP/region that I might be overlooking.

I will be very *very* surprised if anything significant happens in Coventry NW.

Much of the media will be biased against her because of her politics, of course. But some have said she is more interested in her "profile" than the nuts and bolts of being an MP.

She was certainly a weak candidate in 2019: she was essentially foisted on the CLP, there was a lot of unhappiness about this and it fed into wider media narrative of selection stitch-ups in the Midlands (which went down really badly and became toxic in a way that these things usually are not), and so she only just scraped out a win. The constituency is a peculiar one with elements that point in different directions (almost no matter the circumstances) and so is definitely the sort of place capable of producing a 'wrong way' swing.

Both Coventry S and Coventry NW were ultra-marginal in 2019. The initial proposals for boundary changes leave NW unchanged and shore up S a little, but they don't make an awful lot of sense on the ground and there are a lot of other plausible alternatives for S that would make it nominally Tory by 1000-1500 votes.

Interesting, I looked up the constituency results and it seems to have been a very narrowly remaining area. What exactly constitutes the labour party membership in places like that? How hard is it to trigger a reselection ?.

She's one of the few labour MP's I'm familiar with, but I do get a distinct impression of her aiming to be british AOC in terms of profile which just strikes me as silly.

Also this might be a little bit of a side question but exactly what state is the local labour party is in in ultra-Brexit constituencies like Walsall Nort, Stock-on-Tent and others ?

Membership will almost certainly be higher there than in ultra-Brexity places.

An open question to the Labour hivemind- has anyone noticed a big turnout drop in CLP activity?

I can't work out if it's a covid-related hangover or just a result of losing 100,000 members- but we've seen a branch meetings drop by about 25% with posts unfilled & our CLP turnout has dropped.

Other than the great fog horn that went out for the Batley & Spen by-election it also seems that they're struggling to get teams out across the country in the numbers we once could.

What do CLP's generally do in this lul period with few elections external/internal or other political events?

Do they mainly become social clubs or something ?

Yes, there has been a definite drop off in attendance and activism locally. Though actual membership numbers aren't down by that much. Which suggests it is partly Covid related (not least because the average Labour member *tends* to be older) but also there are undoubted political factors at play - quite apart from left wing disagreement with Starmer on various topics, the leadership has largely reverted to the old mindset that elections are won by winning over "low information" voters via the media, and active mass membership is at best "nice to have" and at worst an actual hindrance to this.

My CLP is still doing meetings via Zoom, which makes the situation worse than it would otherwise be.

Red Len was on Peston last night.

It was quite bizarre- he was partly trying to flog his book but he just seemed to be talking as if the
last month hadn’t happened.
