SENATE AND HOUSE ELECTIONS 1992

The Senate makeup remained the same as it did before the election with 57 Democrats and 43 Republicans. George Mitchell would remain as the Majority Leader with Bob Dole as the Minority Leader.

Notable races include Democrat Terry Sanford being re-elected in a close race over Lauch Faircloth in North Carolina as well as Democrat Barbara Boxer winning California's vacant seat.

The House of Representatives elections saw the Democrats lose 9 seats which the Republicans picked up meaning the new makeup of the House is 258 Democrats and 176 Republicans. Tom Foley will continue as Majority Leader with Bob Michel as Minority Leader.

November 4, 1992: President Bush and Vice President Quayle host a celebration luncheon at the White House.

November 4, 1992: Russian Parliament approves the START Treaty.

November 5, 1992: American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer loses a shocking match to Russian Boris Spassky in Belgrade.

November 9, 1992: Howard Stern airs his first radio broadcast in Las Vegas.

November 13, 1992: Evander Holyfield wins a controversial split decision over Riddick Bowe. President Bush sends his congratulations to Holyfield.

November 18, 1992: American forces leave the Philippines ending almost a century of presence.

November 21-23, 1992: A series of tornadoes ranging from F1 to F4 rip through various parts of the country, causing over 300 million dollars in damage as well as 26 deaths and a number of injuries.

November 24, 1992: President Bush addresses the nation following the tornado outbreaks in several states in the country. He expresses his sympathies for the victims and their families and reassures them that they are not alone and that America is with them.

November 25, 1992: President Bush visits tornado ravaged states and surveys the damage.

December 3, 1992: The United Nations Security council votes for U.S. troops to enter Somalia.

December 4, 1992: President Bush announces that 30,000 troops will be deployed to Somalia to help provide security for humanitarian aid until the country has stabilized. Many see this as America trying to be the world police once again.

December 9, 1992: The first plane of American troops touches down in Somalia under heavy gunfire as Operation Restore Hope begins. General Mohamed Farrah Aidid and the United Somali Congress claim that they will not stand for the American invaders.

December 10, 1992: United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali issues a statement saying that American forces are trying to help the citizens of Somalia and that General Aidid must stand down.

December 20, 1992: One month before inauguration day, the Electoral College meets and certifies George H.W. Bush as President and confirms that he will be sworn in as expected on January 20, 1993.

December 20, 1992: Slobodan Milosevic is re-elected as Presdient of Serbia.

December 24, 1992: President Bush pardons Caspar Weinberger for his role in the Iran-Contra affair.

December 29, 1992: Governor Mario Cuomo of New York grants Jean Harris clemency.

January 1, 1993: A New Year's Day celebration is held at the White House.

January 3, 1993: The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty II (START II) treaty is signed by Boris Yeltsin of Russia and President Bush.

January 3, 1993: The 103rd United States Congress is sworn in.

January 8, 1993: David Letterman is announced as the new host of The Tonight Show and reveals that it will be moving from NBC to CBS.

January 10, 1993: Just 10 days before the inauguration, an American serviceman is killed in action in Somalia after a patrol squad is ambushed by militants. General Mohamed Farrah Aidid takes credit and says that this is only the beginning.

January 10, 1993: President Bush makes a prime time address to the nation where he promises to bring General Aidid to justice and that the United States will not stand for these heinous acts in Somalia.

January 20, 1993: George Herbert Walker Bush takes the Presidential Oath of Office and officially begins his second term as President of the United States. James Danforth Quayle takes the Vice Presidential Oath of Office and officially begins his second term as Vice President of the United States.

January 21, 1993: Ross Perot makes his first public appearance since losing the election in November and claims that he will be back and he is certainly not done yet.

January 22, 1993: The remainder of the 30,000 U.S. troops land in Somalia.

January 25, 1993: A shooting at the CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia kills 3 and injures 5. The shooter, Mir Aimal Kasi, is shot and killed by police.

January 25, 1993: President Bush releases a statement regarding the shooting at the CIA Headquarters and in it he expresses condolences for those killed and their families and thanks the first responders for their swift action.

February 7, 1993: Carmen Electra releases her debut album which turns out to be a commercial disaster.

February 8, 1993: General Motors Corporation sues NBC, after Dateline NBC allegedly rigged two crashes showing that some GM pickups can easily catch fire if hit in certain places. NBC settles the lawsuit the following day.

February 10, 1993: The United States officially backs the peace plan in Bosnia.

February 10, 1993: A prime time special of The Oprah Winfrey Show in which she interviews Michael Jackson airs on ABC and draws 90 million viewers.

February 13, 1993: 2 more American servicemen are killed in action in Somalia after their convoy is hit with an IED. 5 are injured.

February 13, 1993: President Bush and Defense Secretary Dick Cheney are briefed on the situation in Somalia and Cheney suggests full scale invasion of Somalia to take down Aidid. Bush refuses this suggestion.

February 26, 1993: A van packed with explosives is parked under the North Tower of the World Trade Center Complex and detonated. 10 are killed with at least 1200 injured. In a prime time address to the nation, President Bush promises to find who is responsible for this heinous act.

February 28, 1993: Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents raid the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas with an arrest warrant for leader David Koresh and after an intense firefight that went late into the night, Koresh is shot and killed.
