He'd be giving regular press conferences where the most bizarre streams of consciousness you'd ever heard from a president came out of his mouth, and since he's kind of a prickly person it wouldn't necessarily be "unifying."

I'll agree with that.  It would depend which Kasich would show up.

One reason Bill Clinton was reelected and Jimmy Carter wasn't was that Bill Clinton was a MODERATE who governed like a LIBERAL, whereas Jimmy Carter was a MODERATE who governed like a MODERATE.  The latter formula is a recipe for leaving no one satisfied with your performance.  The former will at least leave your base happy.  (Moderates are never happy, collectively, because there will always be some area of disagreement with their choice.)

Kasich would have been the conservative who fixed Obamacare.  He'd have reformed it and renamed it, taking credit for it and packaging it as something different.  Indeed, I think Kasich would have rammed through a healthcare program not unlike what the GOP had proposed for years.

Kasich would have been a Wall Street Republican, and a globalist.  It's interesting to speculate as to whether or not that faction of the GOP would have went back into hibernation and have just been grateful to not have to suffer President HRC, or whether they would have spent the past 4 years building toward a 2020 primary challenge.

He would be doing fine.
He would have also received strong approvals like other world leaders during the pandemic (maybe not as high as others, but not in the dumpster like trump).
Less deaths, no "inject disinfectants" bs, and even though the nation's economy would still be suffering, he would have a good chance for re-election in November.

Kasich has been oddly supportive of Trump's handling of the virus, from what I've seen. So I'm not so certain that he wouldn't also be prioritizing the economy over peoples' lives like Trump. After all, it's abundantly clear that Kasich is a major lightweight when it comes to him actually opposing Trump in practice.

At the same time though, he isn't Trump and his handling of it at the federal level would still be perceived better and he would likely win re-election in a near landslide, even in spite of some sort of national economic downturn. To be fair to him, it's not that difficult to handle this better than Trump.
